Once vivacious, Chinese economy is finally heading for a halt
Ajoke, we guess! We really don’t remember the last time when we saw the dragon spewing out fire! Not at least this year. China, despite its deep pool of forex reserves ($2 trillion), certainly seems vulnerable to global financial tsunami. And making it more evident is the sharp fall in its GDP growth, from 10.1% in the June quarter to 9% in the September quarter of 2008.
No doubt, a 9% growth is still exceptional by global standards. But for China, which grew by 11.9% last year and hasn’t curved in below 6% since 1990, it’s a big fall. So, the question now arises - is the current slowdown momentary, or the days of double-digit growth finally over? “Right now, we’re in the midst of a historic crisis, and there’s no doubt we’ll be affected. But the days of double-digit growth are still not over,” counters Jiang Jianqing, Chairman, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Newsweek, Dec. 6, 2008). But looking at corrosion in US and EU, China’s two biggest trade partners, achieving a double-digit growth seems really difficult. Even as per Moody’s, “A more severe and protracted global recession could lower China’s GDP growth to the 5-7% range in 2009 and 2010.”
