Indian Ocean...the Indian Ocean, isolating Bush & denting his Afghan strategy

The decision of Japanese Government to withdraw its Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) from Indian Ocean Region (IOR), is certainly a setback to Bush’s Afghan strategy. Japan, a strong ally of the US in east Asia, sent supply ship Tokiwa & destroyer Kirisame to the IOR in 2001 months after the Parliament passed special anti-terrorism law. The government, which failed to reach a consensus with the Opposition, had no other option but to withdraw the mission as the anti-terror law expired on November 1. Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, however, has said that his government would bring in a new legislation to allow Japan to carry out its mission. But his claims appear to be unrealistic as the Opposition has made plain that it would not support any such move.

The US has already expressed its displeasure over Japan’s move. According to US Ambassador to Japan, Thomas Schieffer, a permanent withdrawal of Japanese mission would send a wrong signal to the “terrorists”. “Japan is a security ally of the US. The security alliance, bilateral cooperation and the refueling mission are three different aspects of US-Japan relations. Therefore, one cannot understand the dynamics of the bilateral relations by focusing on only one of these three. Here, the fundamental question is that how independent Japan is within its security alliance with the US,” Dr. H. S. Prabhakar, a professor at JNU & also the Convener of India-Japan Roundtable told B&E. Anyway, it is for sure that the American lobbyists would do whatever is possible to win over the Japanese.
