They better be. Even so, whatever the cost, the Board for Control of Cricket in India and the IPL dream merchants are — as of now — simply in no mood to outright write off the extravaganza. They will do yet another round of juggling with dates, but give up plans to hold the tournament? Impossible! And they have support, if not from the government at this date, then certainly from cricket fans. For there's consensus that the IPL format is among the finest, inviting favourable comparisons with the English Premier League and Champions League of Europe and NBA and Super Bowl tournaments of the US.

There is a great deal at stake here. IPL's high profile stakeholders like Vijay Mallya, Mukesh Ambani, Shahrukh Khan, Shilpa Shetty and Preity Zinta have together invested millions of dollars to buy the franchise. As we said the size of the pie is simply eye-popping: Rs 1,200 crore! There are television rights, advertising revenue and in-stadia advertisements to consider. The IPL-Sony Entertainment Television spat is already in the courts. Not happy with the games Sony Entertainment Television was playing with it, the IPL was quick to terminate its contract with them and sign up World Sports Group (WSG).

The IPL cocktail is thus a heady one. Few tournaments have raised the kind of expectations that the IPL has. So if the tournament is indeed held, all of the stakeholders stand to profit. But for now all of the millions of dollars that have been pumped into IPL are, as one hardcore cricket lover said, "hanging like a high catch over midwicket". IPL czar Lalit Modi is absolutely on course when he assures that this one is “a completely recession-proof model.” Only trouble is, it isn't security-proof!
