Across millions of breakfast tables each day, there are many who ponder over what letters to fill in those blank boxes surrounded by a few black ones in a pattern. Welcome to the ritual of solving the crossword puzzle – a relatively young yet hugely popular form of puzzle the world over. Rubik’s Cube apart, Crosswords and perhaps Sudoku are posers that look set to survive the test of time and popularity. Journalist Arthur Wynne of Liverpool is credited with ‘inventing’ the crossword puzzle with the first published one in December 1913. Since then, formats have been invented and reinvented but the essence of the world’s most popular word game has remained the same. Then there is the Japanese origin number game Sudoku, which has its own World Championship, the next one scheduled to take place in Zilina, Slovakia from April 24-27 2009. “Sudoku is a perfect example of how a game can be fun, addictive, and challenging. This game was a global sensation and, since the crossword puzzle was introduced in the 1920’s, no other puzzle has spread in popularity so quickly. The interesting thing about Sudoku is that it is really not a number puzzle, but a logic puzzle that happens to use numbers as its language. This is why so many people who wouldn’t normally play number puzzles got so swept away”, says Eric Levin, president of Technosource, which besides developing the ‘TouchCube’, the first completely electronic solvable Cube, also makes ‘Electronic Touch-Screen Sudoku’. So, be it pieces of jigsaw being put together, or when you are looking for that word or number to put in the grid, there just isn’t anything to beat the exhilaration of cracking a puzzle.

Potential winners and certain losers

Khao Aur Khilao budget by Arindam Chaudhuri
Shahrukh khan to Host IIPM 4Ps Annual Business and Marketing Quiz
2,300 IIPM students get jobs

As in so many past general elections, the sad fact this time too is that none of the contestants in the fray seriously believe that their parties’ development record might count with the electorate. Those from old political families also hope that, as in the past, their “tested” brand names will work for them yet again – local problems be damned. In Kerala the Leftists – who face allegations of aligning with anti-national and communal outfits – could well be left biting the electoral dust. As for factional feuds and graft charges, there are as many in that state as in the others.

But Indian governments are not known to fall because of corruption scandals. These might rock them for a while – but the lull after the storm has always proved more enduring than the storm itself. Come to think of it, hate speeches by prominent politicians are widely expected to seat – and not unseat – the guilty candidates. And nobody thinks anything of politicians distributing freebies – and as we recently saw, even loose cash. Their parties might disqualify them, but only when the television channels splash the news 24x 7 and they are afraid their rivals will take advantage of their culpability.

So this is India, the world’s largest democracy, where criminals can be fielded with impunity and – as in Assam – militant outfits can hope to get their candidates inside Parliament, and win any party’s backing so long as it is reasonably certain that the bullet will help in securing the ballot. Read on…

Kerala

Nothing going right for the Left

Poll predictions in Kerala have fallen on their head time and again. Post-Emergency, during the 1977 general elections, Kerala voted against the national anti-Congress trend, and returned Congress candidates in nearly all the seats.

The only time voter surveys were proved right was during the assembly elections in December 2006, when a thumping majority was predicted for the Left Democratic Front (LDF). However, in the 2004 general elections no one believed that the LDF would win 18 of the 20 seats. Back then, most surveys and predictions had projected 10 seats for each of the constituents. But poll pundits this time are giving the UDF 13-plus seats.

The dice is heavily loaded against the CPM-led Left Democratic Front (LDF). The internal wrangling in the CPM and the protracted struggle between state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan and Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan did immense harm to governance. And the distribution of tickets itself was a testy affair. The traditional Kollam seat was denied to the Revolutionary Socialist Party, Ponnani to the CPI and Kozhikode to the Janata Dal. There were allegations that the Ponnani seat was usurped following an under-the-table deal with the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) of Abdul Nazar Madani. (Madani is alleged to have played a major role in the Coimbatore serial blasts.) By this one act, the CPM has had its secular pretensions stripped to the bone. The CPM secretary’s sharing the dais with Madani was the last thing the public could digest. The CPI was pacified with the offer of the Wayanad seat, but the bitterness lingers on. Stung by the insult, the Janata Dal withdrew its lone minister from the cabinet, and has now split vertically. The group led by M.P. Veerendrakumar is opposing the CPM, while the other supports its candidates.

Meanwhile, the Madani-led PDP has paved the way for Muslim consolidation on the other side, with the IUML becoming the rallying point – thereby helping the UDF. The 375-crore Lavalin scandal is also coming to haunt the CPM.

Factional feuds, expulsion of VS loyalists and dilution of the party’s traditional ideology have compelled CPM dissidents to form their own outfit, the Left Coordination Panel. They have fielded candidates in five constituencies: Kozhikode, Vadakara, Palakkad, Ponnani and Attingal.

The UDF is poised to win Thiruvananthapuram, Pathananmthitta, Mavelikkara, Alappuzha, Idukki, Ernakulam, Chalakkudy, Thrissur, Palakkad, Ponnani, Malappuram, Vadakara, Wayanad, Kozhikode and Kannur. The CPM will find it difficult to breach the Opposition camp that is buttressed by dissidents, the Christian Church and caste groups.

The PDP factor will almost certainly alienate a considerable chunk of upper caste Hindu votes and a section of the LDF’s Muslim voters. The PDP votes will not compensate for this. But in some constituencies, like Vadakara, Kannur and Kollam, the PDP votes will help the LDF. It will by no means be easy for the CPM to overcome the Janata Dal in Kozhikode, Vadakara and Wayanad. And the Coordination Panel is bound to cause considerable problems in Palakkad, Kozhikode and Vadakara.

Daughter, Sister, Mother, Wife…

Given the charm and aura of Nehru-Gandhis, it is no surprise that Priyanka and Rahul are expected to revive the congress. sutanu guru looks at the big picture

Tragedy, charisma, mystique, intrigue, power and the sheer ability to sway and swing votes have been the defining traits of political dynasties across the world. Perhaps charisma, ‘winnability’ and tragedy are the three most poignant of the lot. Just a few years after the Camelot dream died with the assassination of John F Kennedy in 1963, brother Robert Kennedy too was assassinated. Just a few years after Indira Gandhi was felled by a hail of bullets fired by her own security guards, her son Rajiv Gandhi was killed in the most horrific manner by a suicide bomber.

Perhaps it is not easy being a Kennedy or a Gandhi. Perhaps the life and times of the Kennedy family in the United States and the Nehru-Gandhi family of India mirror the agony and ecstasy of the two largest democracies of the world. Both nations profess to be deeply democratic where every vestige of monarchy and feudalism have withered away. But both the Kennedys and the Gandhis have been showered with such mass adulation and blind faith that even Emperor Akbar and Queen Victoria would be envious. It is almost mystical; the bond between the families and the fans of the families. How else do you explain the fact that the youngest brother Edward Kennedy remained a serious candidate for President even after his drinking and womanising became public knowledge? How else do you explain the massive outpouring of affection and votes for the ‘bahu’ Sonia Gandhi when she decided to contest elections?

Madan Lal

Along with Roger Binny, Madan Lal was the quiet and efficient utility all rounder who was always overshadowed by Kapil Dev. Yet his Viv Richards wicket during the 1983 World Cup final will always remain etched in memory; though more people remember it for the spectacular catch that Kapil Dev took! Madan Lal has now picked up the fight of his life. He is the Congress candidate from Hamirpur in Himachal and his rival is Anurag Thakur, the son of Himachal Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal.

Rome may not have been built, but can definitely be tread in a day, discovers Neha Sarin

Around the world in $80

Rome is full of beautiful churches and sculptures but few things like the Colosseum, the Vatican City cannot be possibly given a miss. One can opt for a combined entry to the Colosseum and Palatine Hill to save time, energy and money for about €10. Post lunch (which was a loaded pizza slice for €5), I headed to the Vatican City, which mind you, is best witnessed with an audio guide and a reliable book. Don’t intend on saving on these, because they help you interpret something truly magical. I made sure I spared my rest of the evening for sitting at a park bench, sipping on some $2 local wine. After a slight hangover and a power packed first day, I decided to take it easy the next morning. I thought a lazy lunch which consisted of some pasta at a local cafĂ© would be ideal. One word of caution: make sure you don’t sit outside at these tempting roadside cafes as the menu cost automatically doubles up. Top the scrumptious cheesy delight with some window shopping and voila, you become a proud owner of a great memory! And please don’t forget to toss your remaining pennies (you would still be left with some) at the Trevi Fountain at the famous Spanish steps and who knows, maybe that wish could come true!

GULAL - An explosive burst of colours

Khao Aur Khilao budget by Arindam Chaudhuri
Shahrukh khan to Host IIPM 4Ps Annual Business and Marketing Quiz
2,300 IIPM students get jobs

TSI Five-O: Kashyap is in his element, even if the story is a bit of a stretch

There are many kinds of filmmakers blitzing the scene. There is one that is totally market-driven, doing his demand–supply number. There is another for whom cinema is a vehicle of self-expression, be it artistic, political or social. There is yet another for whom these two converge to offer entertaining, intelligent middle of the road content. Then there is the guy for whom movies spell entertainment all the way, the more mindless the better! Then there is Anurag Kashyap – a fiery practitioner who leverages the power and passion of this youngest of art forms to sock it hard and hit where it hurts the most! A volatile samurai who uses the camera as AK-47 to blast the candy floss that masquerades as cinema and present his version through the bloodshot prism of his explosive talent!

For Kashyap-watchers, “Gulaal” is a familiar territory. This time though, it’s a love story-cum-political thriller (with communal supremacy trying to overrun democracy) set in the Rajasthan of the future. Love, lust, passion, greed, deceit, intrigue, betrayal, ambition, and the death of innocence…it is an astonishing and colourful passion play that is as riveting as it is disturbing! A fiery invocation to shock you through cinematic catharsis!

Typically, Kashyap’s strength sometimes becomes his weakness. His irreverent, flamboyant shock tactics can be tiresome and dilute the narrative flow. A little restraint would help. The performances (by a cast of mostly new comers), however, are nothing short of brilliant. As for Kay Kay Menon, Piyush Mishra, Deepak Dobriyal and Mahie Gill (Paro of “Dev D” fame), they rock! The innovative use of lyrics and music (through Mishra as Greek Chorus) is mind blowing too. A niche film attempting to macro the micro – expand the local to universal – “Gulaal” is a must-see for all those who believe that there is life beyond “Singh is Kinng”!
