Interestingly, GAIL takes the honours in the oil & gas sector. And justifiably so, the company, which has also benefitted from its towering presence in the gas sector, is slowly, yet steadily, playing the high stakes game, which is working in its favour. Starting from purely gas transmission, it has now spread its tentacles into E&P, gas marketing, processing, production and marketing of petrochemicals like HDPE and LLDPE and leasing telecom bandwidth. It’s a company that is often criticised for the average age of its management; for it’s simply too high and the company has been caught napping on the issue of succession planning. More recently, it just lost the Satyam bidding war to Tech Mahindra. But Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has done exceptionally well in the capital goods sector with a triple digit PAT growth of 105.79% for the period! Their order book for FY 2008-09 has swelled to Rs.520 billion, as compared to Rs.420 billion for FY 2007-08. Surely this is a company whose recession proof strategies merit analysis. Actually, the company has been building capacities and capabilities steadily over the years to create sustainable value. The new railways business has, in particular, been a stupendous success story last year. The company has also intensified its investments in the power sector, with renewed focus on nuclear power projects for future sustainability.
