The riddle that is Priyanka Gandhi (PG) is yet to be solved. She campaigns for her mother, her brother, delivers real gains for the party, but then returns home to discuss homework. In spite of all the opportunity and potential to be a good leader she has never displayed any ambition to carve out a political career but has always given importance to the need to look after her kids.

B&E: In contemporary India you stand out as a role model. In spite of pressure from Congress and people to join politics, you always gave importance to your family. Tell us how important is the role of a mother in a child’s life, especially when they are young? PG: I think it is absolutely the most important role in a child’s life. In many ways she shapes the child’s character, not by forcing her own rules on him but just by her attitude towards the children. I think it is very important for a mother to be by her children as far as possible.

B&E: Don’t you think the career oriented moms should take a lesson from you. You have all the opportunity to reach the top in politics but you prefer to stay home and look after your family? PG: See, for some people it is not possible because they have to work to support their family financially. But as far as possible they should let the children know they are there.

B&E: Do you agree that a mother’s job is the most difficult job in the world? PG: Yes, I totally agree that it is the most difficult job in the world.

B&E: Why is it that the young nation like India is lead by people who are mostly above 60/70? Don’t you think its high time political parties should allow the youngsters to come forward? PG: I certainly think that more and more young people should join politics and more and more young people should take up these responsibility.

B&E: But it is not that easy for youngsters to come forward. PG: My brother has started a drive for young people to join the Youth Congress. I think it is a really good and hopefully more youngsters will come forward to join politics.

B&E: Don’t you think there should be a retirement age policy for politicians as well? PG: It is really not for me to say. I am the youngest among them and I am not even a politician.

B&E: The opposition considers you a bigger threat than Rahul Gandhi? PG: Then they don’t know Rahul (says it very sternly).

B&E: But don’t you think your participation will be more beneficial for the Congress party? PG: I am participating.

Mind it, there’ll be the devil to pay if you break...

Sarkozy makes little secret of his disdain for members of his own party, luring Socialists like Kouchner and Rama Yade, the junior minister for foreign affairs, into his cabinet, and naming retired Socialist politicians like former Prime Minister Michel Rocard to head national commissions and represent France in international treaty negotiations. Sarkozy can afford to thumb his nose at his party, given the total collapse of the opposition Socialists, who will almost certainly lose the 2012 election.

If Sarkozy governed effectively, such political and institutional departures might seem like a breath of fresh air in a society whose institutions seem increasingly ill-suited to the challenges of a multi-ethnic and post-industrial society. That was how many who supported Sarkozy’s presidential bid viewed him. Sarkozy would be for France what Margaret Thatcher was for Britain: someone who would lead the country out of its impasse, conserving the best aspects of dirigisme but finally giving entrepreneurs room to grow, cracking down on crime, and reforming education. But Sarkozy has not governed effectively, as his party’s disenchantment with him and polling data make abundantly clear. The manic character of his presidency – initiative spilling into initiative, each being the transformative solution to the problem at hand, all opposition denounced as lies, bad faith, and cowardice – has worn thin.

Money spinning politicians have become promotional machines

If election is termed as a sport then campaigners would surely be cheerleaders. Election campaign is turning out to be the most glamorous part of modern election exercises in India. Political parties go left, right and centre to cash on to their campaigns and let no opportunity go by to praise them. The whole trend of expensive and extensive campaigning started after BJP’s India Shining campaign.

This year newspapers were filled with advertisements from ministries of health, social justice, food processing, science and technology, commerce and human resource developments. Each state government too gave full page advertisements boasting about their achievements in leading dailies. Be it about some half-completed flyovers or some airport developments or even gloomy 2010 Commonwealth Games, incumbents bluntly took credit for everything. A whopping $40 million was spent on the “Bharat Nirman” pre-election campaign by UPA while the BJP invested $70 million on Advani’s campaigning alone. As if these tangible forms of campaigning were not enough to redefine the definition of election campaign then few ministers went ahead and made futile and controversial promises as well. Vilasrao Deshmukh assured Muslims that the Government would give them preference in police jobs. The campaigns further saw promotion in all possible ways, be it through creating interactive web sites, re-composing famous songs or even calling in stars and celebrities to perform and even dance. The whole pomp and show of election is never less than any Bollywood star-studded event. And why not? With everything getting commercialised, how can one even think that election campaigns will remain a mere road show? Keep watching, there’s more to come.

Interestingly, GAIL takes the honours in the oil & gas sector. And justifiably so, the company, which has also benefitted from its towering presence in the gas sector, is slowly, yet steadily, playing the high stakes game, which is working in its favour. Starting from purely gas transmission, it has now spread its tentacles into E&P, gas marketing, processing, production and marketing of petrochemicals like HDPE and LLDPE and leasing telecom bandwidth. However, the company remains prone to a slew of external risks and has already faced problems maintaining a healthy balance sheet in the quarter ending December 2009, thanks to a drastic fall in the price of crude (see related Corporation on GAIL, B&E Issue dated April 16, 2009). Going further, the emergence of competitors like Reliance is going to make life harder for this Navaratna PSU. Besides, the subsidy burden will continue to take its toll on profitability.

It’s a company that is often criticised for the average age of its management; for it’s simply too high and the company has been caught napping on the issue of succession planning. More recently, it just lost the Satyam bidding war to Tech Mahindra. But Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has done exceptionally well in the capital goods sector with a triple digit PAT growth of 105.79% for the period! Their order book for FY 2008-09 has swelled to Rs.520 billion, as compared to Rs.420 billion for FY 2007-08. Surely this is a company whose recession proof strategies merit analysis. Actually, the company has been building capacities and capabilities steadily over the years to create sustainable value. The new railways business has, in particular, been a stupendous success story last year. The company has also intensified its investments in the power sector, with renewed focus on nuclear power projects for future sustainability.

How expensive (oops, cheap) is Tata Nano? Well, it’s as ‘expensive’ as a CD player fitted into the ultra luxurious Lexus. So, for a Lexus-owner, Tata Nano may just appear to be a toy, but for Ratan Tata and millions of Indians, Nano personifies their reveries – Ratan Tata’s dream to manufacture the world’s cheapest car, and the hope of millions of Indians who always aspired to own and drive a four-wheeler. Though the people’s car was launched on March 23, 2009, it is expected that bookings would commence only by the second week of April. If you thought that manufacturing the world’s cheapest car was the most daunting task, then think again, for achieving break-even looks even more daunting.

As if ominously, Tata Motors suffered a net loss of Rs.2.63 billion for the quarter ending December 2008 – a dreadful decline by 152%. The earning per share (EPS), too, went down to a negative Rs.5.51 per share for the quarter from a healthy Rs.12.95 yoy. Its arch rivals Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motors posted healthy numbers at a time when Tata Motors saw a fall of 19% in total sales for the month of February. Will Tata Nano indeed be their saving grace?

The International Monetary Fund should be an essential port of call for emerging-market and developing countries facing financing needs. With its ability to mobilise large financial resources and buttress policy credibility, the IMF can help mitigate the large economic and social costs often associated with crises. Against this background, the world has come together in the midst of the crisis to radically overhaul the framework for IMF lending.

Now and in the future, the world needs the IMF to respond flexibly and effectively to its members’ needs. First and foremost, our financing packages should be large enough relative to the size of the problem to make a difference. In addition, the absence of an IMF insurance facility with acceptable terms has been a major gap in the global financial architecture, especially for the more dynamic emerging-market economies. Being the hub of Osama Bin Laden and epicenter of world terror, the sheer unfamiliarity of the land despite years of yankee presence in Afghan is hitting the Obama administration too hard. While Hameed Karzai wants Obama out of Afghanistan, now Obama is returning the sentiment, giving hints for him to be nudged out. But wait, all is not lost. There is a ray of hope, specifically in the central province of Uruzgan, vindicated by the Dutch Army controlling the region.

And for some it was not absolutely unexpected either. Stability at the top management level is the need of the hour for Jet Airways in the financial slump

Turbulent weather, expert pilots needed, and only the best will do. Considering that the Indian aviation sector is going through one of its most critical and painful periods, the change of guard at the helm of Jet Airways is quite significant. A major domestic player of the Indian aviation sector, Jet Airways has recently witnessed a change of guards at the top of its management. And looking at the turbulence in the sector thanks to declining air traffic, mounting input cost et al leading to the bleeding bottom-lines and uninspirational top lines, it becomes all the more important to ensure that the baton is now given in safe hands.

Naresh Goyal’s private carrier Jet Airways’ group CEO Ravi Chaturvedi has put down his papers after serving the airline for only four months (Chaturvedi had joined Jet Airways in October last year after serving FMCG major Procter & Gamble). It cannot be more wrongly timed as the player, who was once the largest private carrier in the market (dethroned by Vijay Mallya’s Kingfisher Airlines), is reeling with the recent Rs.2.14 billion losses in the quarter ended December 2008. This forced the airline major to ask its senior officials to accept salary cuts. It was also forced to close down services to three of its major loss-making international routes (Amritsar-London-Amritsar, Bombay-Shanghai-San Francisco and Bangalore-Brussels) and has also unveiled plans to lease four wide-body Boeing 777 aircraft, coupled with phasing out of three Boeing 737 planes. Were these the actual reasons behind Chaturvedi stepping down from the helm? “The current financial standing of the company has got nothing to do with the resignation of Jet Airways group CEO Ravi Chaturvedi. He has resigned from the company, citing personal reasons. Chaturvedi and his family desire to return to the US,” clears a spoke-person of Jet Airways to B&E.

Remember the good old days, when we used to talk about the “subprime crisis” and some even thought that this crisis could be “contained”? Oh, the nostalgia! Today we know that subprime lending was only a small fraction of the problem. We’re living in a world of troubled borrowers, with new kinds of debt trouble which just keep popping up.

How did this global debt crisis happen? Why is it so widespread? The answer, I’d suggest, can be found in a speech Ben Bernanke, the Federal Reserve chairman, gave four years ago. At the time, what Bernanke said nonetheless foreshadowed the bust to come.The speech, titled “The Global Saving Glut and the US Current Account Deficit,” offered a novel explanation for the rapid rise of the US trade deficit in the early 21st century. The causes, he argued, lay not in America but in Asia. In the mid-1990s, the emerging economies of Asia were major importers of capital, borrowing abroad to finance their development. But after the Asian financial crisis of 1997-98, these countries began protecting themselves by amassing huge war chests of foreign assets, exporting capital to the rest of the world.

Difference that hurts...

Christened after the family name ‘Harrods’, the store in London became UK’s largest retailer shop in the 19th century and by the beginning of the 20th century Harrods had made plans to expand beyond UK. Then there was another entrepreneur Harry Gordon Selfridge, who, bucked up with his retail expertise, set up another department store known as Selfridge in 1909. Both these family-run ventures are UK’s largest two stores (Harrod’s being the biggest, followed by Selfrdiges). A century after Selfridge started business, another departmental store in India – Shoppers Stop is fighting hard to grow, despite working along the same model that Selfridges and Harrods thrived on – an overcautious and slow growth model...

But any similarity only exists on paper. Walk into either Harrod or Selfridges and then walk into the Indian retail outlet of Shoppers Stop. The UK-based retailers are known for the overall ambience and architecture (designed by UK’s leading designer JHP), and they provide for their shoppers a world of rich experience, besides simply the products with a price tag! Premium positioning is what Shoppers Stop is also trying to ape from the two UK-retailers, and lest we sound pessimistic, given the fact that the nation is still predominantly a developing nation, extremely high investments on extremely premium brands makes little business sense.

For eighteen straight years, Nagesh has intently focused on growing Shoppers Stop’s geographical reach. And the impact has been frivolously brilliant, especially in terms of revenues. Look at just the last five years. From Rs.3,448 million turnover in FY 03-04, Shoppers Stop jumped 27% to Rs.4,411 million in FY 04-05. The next year was brilliantly more fantastic. A super growth of 42% made revenues shoot up to Rs.6,228 million in FY 05-06. With Rs.8,123 million in FY 06-07 (30%) and Rs.10,799 million in FY 07-08 (32%), Nagesh commandingly was traversing the upper crust. But both MD Nagesh and CEO Govind knew the warning signs were already there. With three quarters of this year giving Rs.9,606.6 million turnover, replicating last year’s growth might not be possible at all; though all indications are that they will surely beat last year’s revenue figures.

It’s quite ironical then that the year in which Shoppers Stop has reached the historical high grandstand of its revenues, is the same year that has perchance been the worst for it during the past decade. Even before the start of the year, the last quarter of the previous year had given them Rs.25.6 million loss (net after taxes). If that looked only trite figurative or bookish, the next quarter made its intentions clear. A mammoth Rs.256 million loss. The third quarter of the year ending September 2008 was the movie 300 in action; a bloodbath of Rs.496.7 million loss. Fourth quarter ending December 2008 gave another loss of Rs.32.6 million.

Think about it... For decades, the only option for a godforsaken departmental store that Indians ever had was the nightmare of a shopping excuse called Super Bazaar! And if you’re one of the teeming wastrel dozens who had their penny-wise romantic interludes in the generation spanning Kendriya Bhandar, none the better. Come 1991, and Nagesh became the Salvador Dali of shopping, romanticising the art for Indians in a way they felt was alien, yet enslavingly addictive. If the ‘91 inaugural Andheri store started in an upstreet Linking Road in Mumbai smoked the intent, the Ansal’s Plaza outlet in New Delhi went the full figurative blast. From one store in 1991 to 36 in 2009 (and 51 CrossWords, 3 HyperCity Marts), Nagesh, and Shoppers Stop, had arrived! But like I said, till the last year.

The more chaos world inherits, the more revenue Boeing generates

To begin with, Boeing is the world’s largest aerospace company and defence contractor whose operations span from manufacturing aircraft to designing intelligence & security systems, international ballistic missile systems and even international space stations. Some of their advanced defence products range from airlifts, tankers, missile defence systems, battle communication networks, missile weapons, rotorcraft (helicopters), fighters, bombers and unmanned aerial vehicles. Its revenue increased from $61.53 billion in 2006 to $66.4 billion in 2007; but fell relatively to $60.9 billion in 2008. Boeing representatives amusingly are highly optimistic about the recession and have forecasted that Boeing’s revenue will touch around $68-69 billion in 2009. The reason is because even though we know of Boeing primarily as an aircraft manufacturer, almost half of its gross revenue comes from the sale of defence equipment. Boeing generates the highest revenue among all defence dealers. And given the increase in regional conflicts, good times are a coming surely!

The indiscernible thread that binds the F-16s of Lockheed Martin and George Bush is that both are from Texas. At the Fort Worth factory of Lockheed Martin, the jobs of nearly 5,000 workers depend heavily on whether Lockheed gets new orders for F-16s from outside the US, given that the US armed forces have stopped procuring fresh F-16s. Thus, Lockheed depends critically on the sales of aircraft to other countries like Pakistan; and India too. So, for George Bush, it was simple socialism at best, which made him take the decision to sell F-16s to Pakistan. Yet, even then, he could not save the jobs of nearly 2000 workers.

Cut to the present and to Obama’s predicament. If the Indian Air Force order for procuring 126 MMRCA (Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft) doesn’t come to Lockheed Martin – for which they have even developed a new version named F-16 IN, better than the ones used by the US Air Force and Navy – then most of the employees at Fort Worth would see the end of their professional journey. Barack has published his formal statement that he would “develop a strategy for determining when contracting makes sense, rather than continually handing off governmental jobs to well-connected companies.” Would Obama disregard his glorious value statement and, like his predecessor, step in to see that IAF bends to Lockheed’s universe?
