This would only serve their intention of maligning revolutionaries in the eyes of the masses.

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

Just before being hanged, Sukhdev had written a letter to Gandhi, declaring that he believed his country would be served better by his death. He also requested Gandhi not to ask the revolutionaries on behalf of the British to ‘give up violence’. This would only serve their intention of maligning revolutionaries in the eyes of the masses. But Gandhi did not stop appealing to the revolutionaries, and while all of India begged Bapu to plead for the lives of the trio and not sign the Gandhi-Irwin pact, Gandhi went ahead and signed, thus sealing their fate. Many historians believe, Gandhi could have saved them. He chose not to… he would have had his reasons.

As for Sukhdev, on the 23rd of March 1931, at 1933hrs, his tall figure cast a long shadow as he joined his best friends on their way to the gallows. And the walls of Lahore Central Jail echoed his voice as he sang … Shaheedon ki chitaon par judenge har baras mele/ Watan par mitne waalon ka yehi baaki nishan hoga; Kabhi yeh bhi din ayega jab apna raaj dekhenge/ Jab apni hi zameen hogi aur apna aasmaan hoga.

Martyrdom is not a martyr’s alone for there are those that love him, miss him and suffer for him in his wake. And whether it is a Sukhdev Thapar or a Sandeep Unnikrishnan, a nation that cannot honour its heroes, surely doesn’t deserve any…

Betrayal at chauri chaura

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

‘The harm that good men do’, was an essay by Bertrand Russell that I never finished reading but was a heading I often thought about whenever I heard the name Gandhi being discussed… I had often witnessed disparate schools of thought converging on the notion that Gandhi the man, as well as Gandhi the idea, had often done more harm than good to the cause of this nation’s freedom, from both communalism and colonialism. Many years ago, on this very day, the 4th of February, near the town of Gorakhpur, there once lay 22 charred bodies and a few blackened bayonets. And amidst the rubble and ruins of that day, there also lay the smoking ruins of a nation’s aspirations. The year was 1922 and the place – a little known police station in a town called Chauri Chaura.

At Chauri Chaura that day, a non-violent protest march, part of a nation-wide Non-Cooperation movement under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, turned violent when policemen opened fire on unarmed protestors, killing three of them. The angry mob went on the rampage and burnt down the police-chowki. Twenty-two policemen, too, were burnt alive inside the police station. Gandhi felt he had been betrayed, perhaps even shamed by his followers. For him, violence was not an option. His followers had committed themselves to ahimsa. And yet, they had weakened and given in to their impulses, thus jeopardising the movement around the country. He wanted to disown the action of the protestors at Chauri Chaura and therefore he denounced them and withdrew a movement that had galvanised a nation. photo-op

The protestors too felt betrayed. Not only were they being hunted down, but their leader had, in effect, given them up, holding them accountable for not just the death of the policemen but also the withdrawal of the movement.

Increasing the arc of red terror

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

Naxalites are spreading themselves nicely in Maharashtra

February 1, 2009 was a Black Sunday for the Maharashtra Police who lost 15 policemen including one sub-inspector to a group of armed Naxals in an encounter in the jungles of Markegaon village in Gadchiroli district. For the first time, security personnel in such large numbers were killed by the Naxals in Maharashtra.

According to sources, the newly-formed Border-Platoon Dalam is involved in the ambush. The Markegaon area is close to the Maharashtra-Chhattisgarh border.

Reportedly, the ambush triggered after Naxalites belonging to Tippagarh Dalam burnt down a road roller and a tractor engaged in building a bridge on Sawargaon-Kotgul road, near Markegaon, on January 30.

On February 1, the police team was heading towards Markegaon, 45 kms from Dhanora, to investigate the January 30 attack, when the Naxals attacked them. The rebels had reportedly gathered in the area – adjoining Chhattisgarh’s Rajnandgaon district – in huge numbers. The encounter saw 15 policemen fighting valiantly against a hundred odd Naxals but lost the battle after they ran out of ammunition. The bodies of the policeman were mutilated. The rebels fled with two INSAS (Indian National Small Arms System), one two-inch mortar, six self-loading rifles, one pistol and six AK47s.

The last time such an attack happened was in 1992, when nine policemen were killed by rebels. Now, following the killing, a high alert has been sounded in Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh.

The police remains woefully ill equipped. For instance, Anti Naxals Operation’s (ANO) request for a helicopter in Maharashtra has remained in limbo with the Central and state governments for a long time. On February 1, a helicopter was sought from the Chhattisgarh government. According to senior ANO officials, the chopper would have been helpful - if the relief party had landed in time. The dilly-dallying of the officials working in the affected districts has affected the working and morale of the police force.

Six more... to fix more?!

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

Of late, Bajaj Auto has seen some of its worst days, ever! But will new launches alone prove the gracious saviour? Pawan Chabra provides the solution for long-term sustainability... and proves why new launches alone are just not enough

How would you react to the figure if your head of sales came up to you one fine day and claimed that that was the percentage change in monthly domestic sales as compared to the previous year? Would you fire him, or at least give him some words that would buzz around in his nightmares for some good quarters! Now let us put that hypothetical situation in realtime frame. Bajaj Auto Limited, saw its domestic sales falling to a lowly 69,419 units for the month of December 2008, a real-time 53.34 per cent fall in sales (as compared to December 2007) and overall sales falling by 33 per cent, after having fallen for the preceeding months too (see table). Even for the period April-December 2008-09, the growth story was quite demotivating with the percentage figure actually being a negative 21.24 per cent on a yoy comparison! Yes, we do consider the fact that this has been a year/period when many auto giants have kissed the ground below, but at the same time (and for the same period mentioned above), how do we justify the handsome sales growth of Hero Honda, HMSI and Yamaha reading light years better at +11.16 per cent, +16.62 per cent & +27.09 per cent (note the '+'ives there!)? The only two-wheeler company amongst the top four in the country whom we missed out in the statistical comparison above was TVS Motor Co., which too saw a relatively decent fall of just 2.45 per cent in the period mentioned above. So once again, how does Rajiv Bajaj react to the Bajaj ship entering the cursed Doldrums, a curse which has even dug deep into its net profits for the quarter Q3, FY 2008-09, gnawing it by a further 23 per cent to touch Rs.164 crore as compared to Q3, FY 2007-08.

Here's a truth that would perhaps take you by surprise; Rajiv's reaction is thus: the bold man has lined-up six new products to be launched in 2009, with an aim to make a comeback into the positive growth zone (bold!). Out of the 6 new promises, the identity of 4 bikes were revealed, out of which 3 belong to the value-segment and one to the premium-segment (Ninja 250cc).The positive thing working for him at the moment is the fact that most experts in the sector are vouching for his success (with the new launches), as they still consider the Indian auto market to be following a growth trajectory. But will the effort be worth for Bajaj to reach expected heights? And will the company finally stage a comeback, having been reduced to the no. 4 spot in the two-wheeler industry from being counted amongst the top two in the country?

A family woman, Tell us how important is the role of a mother in a child’s life, especially when they are young?

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

B&E's Priyanka Rai in an exclusive one on one with Priyanka Gandhi

The riddle that is Priyanka Gandhi (PG) is yet to be solved. She campaigns for her mother, her brother, delivers real gains for the party, but then returns home to discuss homework. In spite of all the opportunity and potential to be a good leader she has never displayed any ambition to carve out a political career but has always given importance to the need to look after her kids.

B&E: In contemporary India you stand out as a role model. In spite of pressure from Congress and people to join politics, you always gave importance to your family. Tell us how important is the role of a mother in a child’s life, especially when they are young? PG: I think it is absolutely the most important role in a child’s life. In many ways she shapes the child’s character, not by forcing her own rules on him but just by her attitude towards the children. I think it is very important for a mother to be by her children as far as possible.

B&E: Don’t you think the career oriented moms should take a lesson from you. You have all the opportunity to reach the top in politics but you prefer to stay home and look after your family? PG: See, for some people it is not possible because they have to work to support their family financially. But as far as possible they should let the children know they are there.

B&E: Do you agree that a mother’s job is the most difficult job in the world? PG: Yes, I totally agree that it is the most difficult job in the world.

B&E: Why is it that the young nation like India is lead by people who are mostly above 60/70? Don’t you think its high time political parties should allow the youngsters to come forward? PG: I certainly think that more and more young people should join politics and more and more young people should take up these responsibility.

B&E: But it is not that easy for youngsters to come forward. PG: My brother has started a drive for young people to join the Youth Congress. I think it is a really good and hopefully more youngsters will come forward to join politics.

B&E: Don’t you think there should be a retirement age policy for politicians as well? PG: It is really not for me to say. I am the youngest among them and I am not even a politician.

B&E: The opposition considers you a bigger threat than Rahul Gandhi? PG: Then they don’t know Rahul (says it very sternly).

B&E: But don’t you think your participation will be more beneficial for the Congress party? PG: I am participating.

Mind it, there’ll be the devil to pay if you break...

Sarkozy makes little secret of his disdain for members of his own party, luring Socialists like Kouchner and Rama Yade, the junior minister for foreign affairs, into his cabinet, and naming retired Socialist politicians like former Prime Minister Michel Rocard to head national commissions and represent France in international treaty negotiations. Sarkozy can afford to thumb his nose at his party, given the total collapse of the opposition Socialists, who will almost certainly lose the 2012 election.

If Sarkozy governed effectively, such political and institutional departures might seem like a breath of fresh air in a society whose institutions seem increasingly ill-suited to the challenges of a multi-ethnic and post-industrial society. That was how many who supported Sarkozy’s presidential bid viewed him. Sarkozy would be for France what Margaret Thatcher was for Britain: someone who would lead the country out of its impasse, conserving the best aspects of dirigisme but finally giving entrepreneurs room to grow, cracking down on crime, and reforming education. But Sarkozy has not governed effectively, as his party’s disenchantment with him and polling data make abundantly clear. The manic character of his presidency – initiative spilling into initiative, each being the transformative solution to the problem at hand, all opposition denounced as lies, bad faith, and cowardice – has worn thin.

Campaigners = Cheerleaders, The campaigns further saw promotion in all possible ways,

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

Money spinning politicians have become promotional machines

If election is termed as a sport then campaigners would surely be cheerleaders. Election campaign is turning out to be the most glamorous part of modern election exercises in India. Political parties go left, right and centre to cash on to their campaigns and let no opportunity go by to praise them. The whole trend of expensive and extensive campaigning started after BJP’s India Shining campaign.

This year newspapers were filled with advertisements from ministries of health, social justice, food processing, science and technology, commerce and human resource developments. Each state government too gave full page advertisements boasting about their achievements in leading dailies. Be it about some half-completed flyovers or some airport developments or even gloomy 2010 Commonwealth Games, incumbents bluntly took credit for everything. A whopping $40 million was spent on the “Bharat Nirman” pre-election campaign by UPA while the BJP invested $70 million on Advani’s campaigning alone. As if these tangible forms of campaigning were not enough to redefine the definition of election campaign then few ministers went ahead and made futile and controversial promises as well. Vilasrao Deshmukh assured Muslims that the Government would give them preference in police jobs. The campaigns further saw promotion in all possible ways, be it through creating interactive web sites, re-composing famous songs or even calling in stars and celebrities to perform and even dance. The whole pomp and show of election is never less than any Bollywood star-studded event. And why not? With everything getting commercialised, how can one even think that election campaigns will remain a mere road show? Keep watching, there’s more to come.

The new railways business has, in particular, been a stupendous success story last year.

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

Interestingly, GAIL takes the honours in the oil & gas sector. And justifiably so, the company, which has also benefitted from its towering presence in the gas sector, is slowly, yet steadily, playing the high stakes game, which is working in its favour. Starting from purely gas transmission, it has now spread its tentacles into E&P, gas marketing, processing, production and marketing of petrochemicals like HDPE and LLDPE and leasing telecom bandwidth. However, the company remains prone to a slew of external risks and has already faced problems maintaining a healthy balance sheet in the quarter ending December 2009, thanks to a drastic fall in the price of crude (see related Corporation on GAIL, B&E Issue dated April 16, 2009). Going further, the emergence of competitors like Reliance is going to make life harder for this Navaratna PSU. Besides, the subsidy burden will continue to take its toll on profitability.

It’s a company that is often criticised for the average age of its management; for it’s simply too high and the company has been caught napping on the issue of succession planning. More recently, it just lost the Satyam bidding war to Tech Mahindra. But Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has done exceptionally well in the capital goods sector with a triple digit PAT growth of 105.79% for the period! Their order book for FY 2008-09 has swelled to Rs.520 billion, as compared to Rs.420 billion for FY 2007-08. Surely this is a company whose recession proof strategies merit analysis. Actually, the company has been building capacities and capabilities steadily over the years to create sustainable value. The new railways business has, in particular, been a stupendous success story last year. The company has also intensified its investments in the power sector, with renewed focus on nuclear power projects for future sustainability.

Small package...,Ratan Tata’s dream to manufacture the world’s cheapest car,

The Most Revolutionary Concept In Education PLANMAN CHE CENTRE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION, Supported by IIPM India’s Leading B-School

...but is the Tata Nano actually going to be a good thing for Tata Motors? The answer to that question is littered with ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’

How expensive (oops, cheap) is Tata Nano? Well, it’s as ‘expensive’ as a CD player fitted into the ultra luxurious Lexus. So, for a Lexus-owner, Tata Nano may just appear to be a toy, but for Ratan Tata and millions of Indians, Nano personifies their reveries – Ratan Tata’s dream to manufacture the world’s cheapest car, and the hope of millions of Indians who always aspired to own and drive a four-wheeler. Though the people’s car was launched on March 23, 2009, it is expected that bookings would commence only by the second week of April. If you thought that manufacturing the world’s cheapest car was the most daunting task, then think again, for achieving break-even looks even more daunting.

As if ominously, Tata Motors suffered a net loss of Rs.2.63 billion for the quarter ending December 2008 – a dreadful decline by 152%. The earning per share (EPS), too, went down to a negative Rs.5.51 per share for the quarter from a healthy Rs.12.95 yoy. Its arch rivals Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motors posted healthy numbers at a time when Tata Motors saw a fall of 19% in total sales for the month of February. Will Tata Nano indeed be their saving grace?

As the real crisis lender, IMF must tailor its policies & provide pre-crisis financing

The International Monetary Fund should be an essential port of call for emerging-market and developing countries facing financing needs. With its ability to mobilise large financial resources and buttress policy credibility, the IMF can help mitigate the large economic and social costs often associated with crises. Against this background, the world has come together in the midst of the crisis to radically overhaul the framework for IMF lending.

Now and in the future, the world needs the IMF to respond flexibly and effectively to its members’ needs. First and foremost, our financing packages should be large enough relative to the size of the problem to make a difference. In addition, the absence of an IMF insurance facility with acceptable terms has been a major gap in the global financial architecture, especially for the more dynamic emerging-market economies. This is despite all the evidence of the value of early access to IMF financing, before a tough situation deteriorates into a crisis.

History shows Dutch have been more successful than Americans

The Brits couldn’t do it, Soviets got it premature, the US couldn’t even get it up, while the Dutch seem to be having a field run. We mean the Afghan strategy! Our suggestive innuendos aside, US led allied forces in the inhospitable terrain of Afghanistan can’t seem to get their counter terrorism strategy up and running.

Being the hub of Osama Bin Laden and epicenter of world terror, the sheer unfamiliarity of the land despite years of yankee presence in Afghan is hitting the Obama administration too hard. While Hameed Karzai wants Obama out of Afghanistan, now Obama is returning the sentiment, giving hints for him to be nudged out. But wait, all is not lost. There is a ray of hope, specifically in the central province of Uruzgan, vindicated by the Dutch Army controlling the region.
