Rainbow coalition in the offing
The recently concluded elections in Morocco appear to have driven away left-wing parties and given an edge to the right & conservative parties. The clear winner in the election, which saw only 37% voter turnout was the Istiqlal party, with 52 seats, ahead of the Opposition Islamist Justice and Development party (PJD) with 46 seats. And the biggest loser was Union of Socialist Popular Forces (USFP), which previously held the most seats, fell to 38 seats.
In fact, contrary to the predictions, the elections did not bring about a “crushing victory” for the Islamists. On the contrary, their performance was generally below expectations. The PJD, despite bagging a second place, failed to match its own performance of 2002 elections. In 2002 elections, the PJD contested in 51 constituencies and bagged 42 seats. In 2007, it had fielded candidates in 94 constituencies, but managed to wrest just 46 seats. Reacting on the results to B&E, noted Moroccan expert, Amal Fadlalla said, “Parties like Istiqlal are electoral machines that know how to win over their clientele. In a conservative society like Morocco, people don’t vote for groups but for people according to their religion, ethnic background and then their political programme.”
Meanwhile, the Istiqlal victory has come as a sigh of relief for Morocco’s King Mohammed, who was allegedly annoyed at the prospects of having to appoint a premiere belonging to an Islamist formation, which for years, has been vocally critical of his efforts to what he terms as to reform Moroccan society.”
Experts believe that the results will lead to a re-arrangement of political forces & will lead to a rainbow coalition constituting the ruling majority, Meanwhile, there are chances that the USFP will withdraw from the alliance following its poor election results. The result has also pacified Western analysts who had reservations regarding the political and social programme of Islamists and feared that they might succumb to al-Qaeda or its splinter groups; as some of Morocco’s neighbours had done. Now, if one wants Morocco to wade off all threats to its democracy as well as its polity, it needs to keep the fundamentalist elements on a tight leash & ‘nip the evil in the bud.’
