Rainbow coalition in the offing

ELECTIONS: MOROCCOThe recently concluded elections in Morocco appear to have driven away left-wing parties and given an edge to the right & conservative parties. The clear winner in the election, which saw only 37% voter turnout was the Istiqlal party, with 52 seats, ahead of the Opposition Islamist Justice and Development party (PJD) with 46 seats. And the biggest loser was Union of Socialist Popular Forces (USFP), which previously held the most seats, fell to 38 seats.

In fact, contrary to the predictions, the elections did not bring about a “crushing victory” for the Islamists. On the contrary, their performance was generally below expectations. The PJD, despite bagging a second place, failed to match its own performance of 2002 elections. In 2002 elections, the PJD contested in 51 constituencies and bagged 42 seats. In 2007, it had fielded candidates in 94 constituencies, but managed to wrest just 46 seats. Reacting on the results to B&E, noted Moroccan expert, Amal Fadlalla said, “Parties like Istiqlal are electoral machines that know how to win over their clientele. In a conservative society like Morocco, people don’t vote for groups but for people according to their religion, ethnic background and then their political programme.”

Meanwhile, the Istiqlal victory has come as a sigh of relief for Morocco’s King Mohammed, who was allegedly annoyed at the prospects of having to appoint a premiere belonging to an Islamist formation, which for years, has been vocally critical of his efforts to what he terms as to reform Moroccan society.”

Experts believe that the results will lead to a re-arrangement of political forces & will lead to a rainbow coalition constituting the ruling majority, Meanwhile, there are chances that the USFP will withdraw from the alliance following its poor election results. The result has also pacified Western analysts who had reservations regarding the political and social programme of Islamists and feared that they might succumb to al-Qaeda or its splinter groups; as some of Morocco’s neighbours had done. Now, if one wants Morocco to wade off all threats to its democracy as well as its polity, it needs to keep the fundamentalist elements on a tight leash & ‘nip the evil in the bud.’

As an FMCG player you must indeed be available everywhere

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

global business. The other key success mantra that FMCG giants are chanting is the food sector. With an estimate to reach, Rs.1.35 trillion by 2015 (according to Rabo Indian Finance) food is believed to be the golden goose for the FMCG industry. Even FICCI claims that among all segments of FMCG, food is one of the most high potential segments (the other is personal care), which will see a constant growth of over 20% till 2015. So food is emerging as a cash cow for the FMCG players and all are betting big bucks in this sizzling hot market. Players who already have ventured this segment are strengthening their position through having a robust raw material base. Like Nestle, to ensure it’s milk supply base has tied up with Andhra Pradesh-based Heritage Foods India Ltd. In the same league Yakult Danone India, a joint venture between Yakult Honsha and Danone Group is gung ho to have a manufacturing hub in India for their global business.

quest for new frontiers Integrative growth is becoming increasingly important for companies. The major challenge FMCG players today face is rising commodity prices, and gaining control over manufacturing is critical from Reckitt Benckiser’s perspective as well. According to Sethi, one of the key focus areas for the company over the next five years would be “to strengthen its position on the manufacturing side.”

Forward integration is not viewed as an option by the company, as it wants to retain focus on its core competency of brand building and relies largely on its distribution network, which has, so far, worked wonders for Reckitt. States Gautam Suri, Brand Manager, Reckitt Benckiser India Ltd., “Our marketing strategy has always focused around uplifting the brand. That’s the reason for each of our brands, our distribution channel has been totally different. Unlike other FMCGs, we don’t want to promote our company’s name, but rather the products that we offer.”

‘Mumbai’tizens, can forget standing in the queues or traveling long distances for getting birth or death certificate prepared.

Mumbai gets a ‘.com’ solution

E-GOVERNANCE: MUMBAIWith distances getting shorter by the day and with time becoming a scarce commodity for today’s generation, the need of the hour is to make things even more accessible and hassle-free. With this basic philosophy, Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), which is also the largest municipal corporation in the country, has announced its own web-portal.

Dedicated to addressing the issues of the citizens of Mumbai, the portal is basically aimed at taking the government closer to the people. With the help of this portal, citizens of Mumbai can forget standing in the queues or traveling long distances for getting birth or death certificate prepared. There would also be other such benefits that the people of Mumbai can get through this portal, like getting their MPFA licenses, trade licenses, hoarding licenses, advertisement licenses, and even their complaints registration for water works etc.. Shubha Raul, Mayor of Mumbai, said on the occasion, “It is with great pride that I announce the successful completion of the ambitious Citizens Portal. I am very happy to dedicate this project to the service of citizens of Mumbai city as it will enhance efficiency of the corporation, make it even more transparent and save valuable time of the citizens.”

Although it is a noteworthy step that would be significant in the direction of e-governance but the basic question would still be how many people in the state of Mumbai would have access to internet to use this facility. Also, we are well aware of the status of many of government’s existing websites which are never updated on time and have failed to provide the promised service. If MCGM changes all the pre-conceived civic notions, with its efficiency, other civic bodies will follow suit, whereby click of the mouse would join citizens & civic functioning.

Virtualisation enters to secure your tech belongings...

VIRTUALISATION: GADGET SECURITYJohn Watts, 27, heads the strategic marketing team at one of the leading consumer durables companies of the world. Though John has a few of his unique strategies to push his company’s market share, there is one common thing which he shares with his counterparts all around the world. His desk is no less than a gadget house with a myriad of latest technology products ranging from a mobile phone, a laptop, bluetooth device, a palm top, a LCD, a projector, amongst others.

While John is sure of how to use these products, he has no clue whatsoever about the security of his gadgets. Interestingly, even the manufacturers of those products are as clueless as John! Leading technologists have been compelled to find a one-stop solution to secure various gadgets. In such a scenario, Virtualisation Technology has come to the rescue of the consumers and the companies. Monica Basso, Research Director at Gartner, says, “More personal devices are being brought into the business space. This diversity and the lack of security on such devices is putting companies at risk.”

To avoid this risk, Virtualisation will enable companies to maintain tight security by sending security and access-control application to mobile devices and checking the operations of all mobiles phones through centralised system. It will also make sure that all corporate devices adhere to the same consistent security rules by customisable software. Consequently, Virtualisation will not only be an add-on to the security feature of companies but is also economical, has more options in terms of customisation and can be integrated with almost all hardware. It seems that Virtualisation is bliss for corporates which find themselves stuck in outrageously complicated situation of managing security breaches. Though, technologists are already working on the technology, how quickly will Virtualisation take over our devices, is a question everyone is pondering.

It was available in all the high-end counters and it also had a well-placed network

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

It is felt, though, that Videocon scores low on brand awareness and recall. Harish Bijoor, CEO, Harish Bijoor Consults Inc. agrees, but is positive about the Videocon brand, as he comments to B&E, “It is viewed to be international, thanks to the tag of ‘Videocon International’. The brand is considered medium quality, but high on delivery. It is in a cusp status between the Korean brands at the top and brand images such as the ones enjoyed by Akai & Aiwa at the bottom.”

The other brands have their own unique positioning. Kelvinator, for instance, is launched only in North India, where, Tandon claims, the brand has occupied 13-14% market share without very significant advertising. He further elaborates how Hyundai is strategically placed to attack the Korean brands, Akai is based on the low price platform in consumer electronics and Sansui as a brand takes advantage of its Japanese lineage. But how confident is the company of turning around the Electrolux brand, which has already faltered in India in front of the aggressively low priced competition? Of course, for that, the right man to ask is Anirudh Dhoot, son of V. N. Dhoot and Managing Director, Electrolux Kelvinator Ltd. who we met separately in Mumbai. In Electrolux, one can see fleeting glimpses of how Videocon approaches new business opportunities.

reviving electrolux

When B&E had earlier interviewed Hans Straberg, President & CEO, AB Electrolux, he had expressed immense confidence in his partnership with Videocon in India, and said that the company was confident of making a comeback. When we asked Anirudh Dhoot to comment on how the company viewed the Electrolux acquisition, he stated, “Before Videocon took over; Electrolux had a good brand name, reputation in the market. It was available in all the high-end counters and it also had a well-placed network.” And the negatives were more linked to the costs not being effectively managed, as in the company was suffering from high overheads, which proved a major drawback in India. So Videocon decided to become an OEM to them, utilising all their expertise, and leveraging on the brand.

Search, mail & now, call Google a novice in the wireless market, call it just a wild reverie on its part, yet competitors are today all ears to the sl

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Industry watchdogs are anticipating a Linux-based mobile – the Gphone, it just a wild reverie on its part, yet competitors are today all ears to the slightest development in the G-phone.

GOOGLE INC.: G-PHONE, BEHIND THE SCENES The mobile industry is abuzz with a rumoured prototype of the upcoming G-Phone doing the rounds and hopefully, it’s not too far away... And with all hopes pinned on its first hardware device is Google’s foray into the mobile operating system market, a space which at present is overwhelmingly dominated by London-based Symbian and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile. However, trailing behind these two heavyweights is Linux (an operating system on which the G-phone will run). True enough, though Linux today is considered a highly adaptive interface to suit phone-makers and service providers needs, yet it hasn’t been able to make a mark in the wireless segment.

However, Google’s move to capture space in the smartphone segment hasn’t ruffled the feathers of existing players as was evident from the fact that its quiet takeover of the Palo-Alto based startup, Android in 2005 created no ripples in the industry. Now that was a strategic move on Google’s behalf to mark an entry in the wireless business. So even today, with the 22-months-old start-up in its pocket, along with co-founder Andy Rubin (of Danger Inc. fame), Larry Page & Sergey Brin are yet to establish themselves as a threat to others in the mobile space atleast – both in devices and user interface software. Talking about the takeover, all that a company official had to say was, “We acquired Android because of the talented engineers and great technology. We’re thrilled to have them here...”

However, with the new product running a unique variant of Linux, with the handset manufactured by HTC, and with the features on the product supposedly planned to be web-based (with search and email facilities), there is no room for speculation that once the product hits the market shelves, competitors will have some work cut short owing to Google’s prowess in the search and email space. Moreover, Google’s ingenuity to customise original desktop applications to the mobile interface is a well known fact (a case apparent with Gmail, Google Toolbar, Docs et al) which makes up for more than just its argument to hit the hilltop with its new product.

At present, Andy Rubin and his team have already developed a device running on Linux based OS, which is being shown to major phone and hardware makers across the world. So for Google, this could also possibly be an alternate strategy to diversify into the OS space in collboration with Linux... However, what doesn’t make real sense is Google’s strategy to support its phone running on its own OS with streams of advertisements. “Advertisements?! And that too on phones?!” Sure enough, for those who’ve lost love for marketers who reach them through mobile phones, the G-phone is a strict no no! Perhaps such a strategy will work for certain pockets like those of teenagers and freeloaders but definitely not for the working class who value time more than money.

So there you are. Call Google a novice in the wireless market, call it just a wild reverie on its part, yet competitors are today all ears to the slightest development in the G-phone. Moreover, with Google’s massive infrastructure and ability to sustain internal projects (with its cash reserves) along with a talent pool of some of Silicon Valley’s finest brains, and with users looking-out for an alternative to Apple’s iPhone, many can’t wait for the first from Google’s formidable stable! And yes, we’re just as excited as you are!

TOMOTAKA ISHIKAWA: CEO & MD,YAMAHA

He may be short, bespectacled and packaged in a wiry frame, but TOMOTAKA ISHIKAWATomotaka Ishikawa, the man who occupies top slot in Yamaha Motor India (YMI) these days, comes with a tall claim to fame. Ishikawa is the blue eyed boy of the world’s second largest bike-maker because of the marketing mettle he has consistently displayed to save Yamaha from the onslaught of rival bike-manufacturers in several Southeast Asian countries. His last stint was in Thailand (2000-2005), where the Japanese major was being browbeaten by the combined strength of rivals Honda and Suzuki. Before Ishikawa, the Yamaha product line-up in Thailand was weak and demand was at a rock bottom. Ishikawa snapped his heels and in just five years, turned around Yamaha’s fortunes in Thailand. Market share went up from sub-9% to over 25% in 2005.

“When I arrived in Thailand, the situation was bleak. We were following Honda, launching competing products to them. I said that we have to carve our own niche. We launched automatic engines, a first for Asian markets; targeted younger customers, with our styling and accessories; introduced merchandising to reflect the new hi-fashion, hi-sense, cool Yamaha; raised our prices and the rest is history,” explains the affable Ishikawa, adding that the Thailand experience is exactly what he wishes to replicate in India. And his India strategy may just pay off. Yamaha is exactly in the same quagmire in India as it was once in Thailand, only instead of Japanese competitors Honda and Suzuki; YMI faces the might of Hero Honda, Bajaj and TVS in India, which together rule the bulk of India’s motorcycle market currently.

Just as Ishikawa changed the scenario in Yamaha’s product-line up in Thailand, he’s looking to do similar in India, by building new platforms. When the Japanese two wheeler giant made its India foray in 1985 (in partnership with Escorts), Yamaha launched the RX100 (two-stroke bike), which soon made inroads into the hearts of Indian bikers with its sporty, performance-driven appeal. Then oil prices went through the roof, new emission norms came into play, the market shifted gears to fuel-efficient, four-stroke bikes and Yamaha could not compete. Hero Honda, Bajaj and TVS walked away will all the glory.

Sour ‘Kurd’ penetrates hot ‘Turkey’

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

The Kurds & the Turks need to settle dispute diplomatically

BORDER CLASHES: TURKEY Turkey has finally decided to grant diplomacy another chance to sort out the mess created by Kurdish rebels. The military action against the Kurdish rebels has been withheld till the completion of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to Washington on November 5. His scheduled meeting with Bush is being seen as the zenith of frenzied diplomatic commotion aimed at forestalling a Turkish incursion in northern Iraq.

However, fuelled by rebel attacks that have killed at least 42 persons this month, the Turkish public has demanded a concentrated effort against the Kurdistan Workers’ party fighters (PKK), who are operating from bases in Kurdish-controlled northern Iraq. Talking to B&E, noted Kurd expert from The Foundation for Political, Economic & Social Research (SETA), Tubanur Sönmez, said: “Time is running out for diplomatic endeavours. It’s high time Kurds are controlled or Abdullah Gul will go ahead with his own ‘military endeavour’.”

Ankara is frustrated by the failure of both US forces in Iraq & Iraqi regular forces to stop the PKK. Turkey has amassed as many as 100,000 troops along the mountainous border, ahead of a possible operation, to crush some 3,000 PKK fighters using northern Iraq as a launch pad for raids in Turkey. Direct military action against the Kurds in Iraq is little far fetched, the floodgates for a protracted conflict have been thrown open in the already disturbed region.
