Ditto with another straggler, Vijay Kumar Sharma, who narrates a similar story of harassment and fear. The Taliban, he says, are currently running a parallel government. Before he and his family fled, they had managed to sell off their household items.

Rekha, a woman migrant from Peshawar told TSI: “We heaved a sigh of relief when we reached here. As a girl, I never left home and there was no question of attending a school.”

Other eyewitness accounts reveal similar tales. “I sold my cosmetic shop as sales had nose-dived after the Taliban forced women to wear burqas,” said Laxmi Narain, who was lucky enough to find a buyer for his house before he got the Indian visa. He adds gravely: “When law enforcement agencies are feeling helpess, who are we? We are not blaming the government, but the reality is that terrorists are calling the shots.”

According to those who have reached India, numerous Hindu families are languishing in the tribal areas of Pakistan, unable to get visas for India. Narain predicts direly that more Hindu families would be forced to migrate to India in the coming days.

How many Hindus are there in Peshawar? At a rough estimate their number would be about 25 odd families.

The latest batch of refugees from the Swat-Peshawar belt, who reached Amritsar in January 2009, say that with increasing Islamic radicalisation, the sense of insecurity of their women and the future of children has created a situation so terrifying that leaving home and hearth remained the only honourable option.

Five such Hindu families from Peshawar and nearby tribal areas have arrived in India as refugees, seeking political asylum. The group, including 16 men and an equal number of women and three children, are presently lodged with their relatives in Chheharta town of Amritsar district on the Indo-Pakistan border. Some other fellow travellers have, in the meanwhile, gone to New Delhi seeking political asylum.

“After taking control of the Swat Valley and tribal areas, the Taliban have started moving into cities. They are approaching Peshawar, having already occupied the outskirts of the city. We have heard stories of molestation and cruelty against women in these areas. Seeking safety, we decided to move to India,” says Jagdish Sharma, a hakeem (a doctor who practices traditional medicines) whose family has been residents of Peshawar for generations. When the threat became too difficult to take, Sharma sold off his medicine shop, a property owned by his forebears. The situation in Swat in 2009, tragically, has invited comparisons with Punjab in 1947. “I don’t know what the situation was during Partition, but the present situation is so stifling that no one can even breathe freely. Posters have appeared in villages around Peshawar in support of the Taliban and their social and moral code, which stipulates beards for men and no education or rights for women. The Taliban have written their own laws. Now India should help us by granting us nationality because we are not willing to go back”, Sharma wails. They cannot, under the circumstances.

They better be. Even so, whatever the cost, the Board for Control of Cricket in India and the IPL dream merchants are — as of now — simply in no mood to outright write off the extravaganza. They will do yet another round of juggling with dates, but give up plans to hold the tournament? Impossible! And they have support, if not from the government at this date, then certainly from cricket fans. For there's consensus that the IPL format is among the finest, inviting favourable comparisons with the English Premier League and Champions League of Europe and NBA and Super Bowl tournaments of the US.

There is a great deal at stake here. IPL's high profile stakeholders like Vijay Mallya, Mukesh Ambani, Shahrukh Khan, Shilpa Shetty and Preity Zinta have together invested millions of dollars to buy the franchise. As we said the size of the pie is simply eye-popping: Rs 1,200 crore! There are television rights, advertising revenue and in-stadia advertisements to consider. The IPL-Sony Entertainment Television spat is already in the courts. Not happy with the games Sony Entertainment Television was playing with it, the IPL was quick to terminate its contract with them and sign up World Sports Group (WSG).

The IPL cocktail is thus a heady one. Few tournaments have raised the kind of expectations that the IPL has. So if the tournament is indeed held, all of the stakeholders stand to profit. But for now all of the millions of dollars that have been pumped into IPL are, as one hardcore cricket lover said, "hanging like a high catch over midwicket". IPL czar Lalit Modi is absolutely on course when he assures that this one is “a completely recession-proof model.” Only trouble is, it isn't security-proof!

The actual target of the rebels appears to be their previous friends in arms

In what has compelled a section of British politicians and analysts to claim that Northern Ireland is once again staring in to an “abyss”– following ten peaceful years – the Continuity IRA, a splinter cluster of banned Irish Republican Army, has shot a police officer and two British soldiers dead.

The assassination was first for a police office holder in Northern Ireland since 1998, when adversaries British Protestant and Irish Catholic statesmen struck the Good Friday peace deal. Also, it was for the first time that officers of the elite PSNI (a special force to counter terror activities) were targeted since this paramilitary force was incepted in 2001. Things had changed considerably following the peace deal. The deal saw the disarmament of IRA in 2005 followed by a unity Catholic-Protestant government in 2007.

Constable Stephen Carroll, 48, was shot dead by a single bullet lodged in his brain as he was rushing to respond to a call for aid in Craigavon last week. Just days before it, two Corps of Royal Engineers soldiers – Cengiz "Patrick" Azimkar, 21, and Mark Quinsey, 23 – were gunned down close to their base command centre while they were collecting pizzas from a delivery-boy. Masquerading as pizza delivery boys and killing police personnel has been an age-old technique of IRA recruits.

Response to the incidents has brought quick denunciation from Sinn Fein, the Irish nationalist party that was once seen as close to IRA.

However, their statements following the assassinations have been cautiously tuned – calling the “actions” as “counter-productive” and evading until pushed, the word “murder”. Ironically, the actual target of the rebels appears to be their previous friends in arms, Martin McGuinness – currently joint first minister of Northern Ireland's devolved government – and Gerry Adams, Sinn Fein’s head. How will Sinn Fein manage to come out of this upheaval will be the real challenge in front of it.

Reacting to the incident, Richard English, an expert on Northern Ireland politics, told TSI from Belfast: “The next one year is crucial. If the threat from dissidents subdues, it will appear as if Sinn Fein took an acid test and came out unscathed. The fear of falling into the abyss will melt forever.”

The killers are nonconformist Republicans belonging to disparate offshoots from the old Provisional IRA. What is needed to be seen is that whether jointly the rebels can carry on the impetus of the last few days. Although this group has tried to set off several car bombs in last few months, because of limited technical know-how, all of them failed. Triumph in their provisos would see British soldiers back on the streets and lanes of Belfast, and sophisticated anti-terrorist manoeuvres by overt and covert sections of the armed forces – a prospect disliked by Catholics and Protestants alike.

When everything else becomes uncertain, dim and disqueting, God becomes the last refuge for troubled souls. in troubled times. Priyanka Rai reports on how urban indians are seeking solace and salvation

He thought moving back home would help him land on his feet. He ended up stepping in quicksand… Alpesh Vangule, 24, a meltdown victim, worked for the well known company Robert Walts in Singapore and enjoyed the good life. Suddenly, scores of people like him were politely-and some not so politely-given the proverbial pink slips. Vangule flew back to India and realized that the meltdown had chased him remorselessly even to his homeland. He could breathe ‘Indian’ air. But there were no Indian jobs. Now, he has turned to God for solace and salvation. “I was not religious, but all of sudden I realised that there is some universal power and I am seeking help from that power now. My only guide is God”, says Alpesh. Welcome to the world of Alpesh, whose fellow inhabitants now know that the journey from dreams to nightmare is just a pink slip away. Like millions throughout history, they have all turned to God as the hope of the last resort. India has always been religious and spiritual; but the sudden explosion in devotion is both astonishing, and inevitable.

These days, Sreekumar wears three various raksha sutras; one on his right upper arm, one on the right wrist and one around his neck to save his job. A native of Changanachery, he works for a private company at Chennai supplying components to DRDA. He is now a regular visitor to various temples in Kerala. Every weekend, he goes to the famous Guruvayur in Kerala. “When my company announced that due to recession they are going to take some cost cutting measures. I was worried. I could only think of God and decided to visit lord Guruyayurappa.” says Sreekumar.

Temples, churches, mosque’s are witnessing a steady rise in attendance. Sabarimala is one of the most revered pilgrim centres in India, Latest figures released by the temple suggest that about 5 crore people visit the shrine every year and this season there was an income of around Rs 120 crores . ``There is around 20 percent increase in the flow of pilgrims this year, and it is increasing every year’’ Sabarimala Temple Executive Officer Balalchandran told TSI.

The spokesman of Jagnanath temple in Puri said the temple is "overflowing". According to him, 30,000 to 40,000 devotee visits the shrine everyday . And this number increases on weekends and holidays. On festival days, the visitor count touches 80,000 to 1,00,000. In last ten years, the inflow of visitors has increased around 20 times.

After Beethoven's death in March 1827, two documents were discovered in his desk. These were the Heiligenstadt Testament and this love letter. The passionate feelings manifested in this letter were addressed to a person unknown. Many have speculated over whom might be the recipient. It was made more difficult by the fact that there is no mention of place from where it has been written. But experts, following Beethoven's date on the letters, his movement during the period (1812) and studying the persons close to Beethoven, has come to the solution that Antoine Brentano must be the answer—now generally accepted as being correct.

July 6, in the morning

My angel, my all, my very self

Lacking horses the post-coach chose another route, but what an awful one; at the stage before the last I was warned not to travel at night; I was made fearful of a forest, but that only made me the more eager - and I was wrong. The coach must needs break down on the wretched road, a bottomless mud road. Without such postilions as I had with me I should have remained stuck in the road. Importantly, based as they would be in localities and colonies, they can serve as useful `detectives’ for our intelligence agencies. Former director general of Tihar Prison, R.P.Singh, told TSI, “Private guards are manning all parts of cities. They have sensitive and important information. However, due to lack of coordination with the police, they are not utilised. Government can even think of taking their service for intelligence gathering. This will help to break terrorists’ network.” Unarguably, private security cannot become an alternative to official agencies, like the regular police or army or paramilitary forces, but can become a handy placebo. Sophisticated, armed and efficient, on duty at prime hotels, airports, industrial hubs, with quick response times that does not need bureaucratic clearances is pretty much the need of the hour.

Security companies are, naturally, worked up. A number of them – Topsline and G4Securities for instance – amongst dozens of others have mushroomed in the last few years. Now with the bill, they will get official teeth.

Says Vikas Verma, MD, Property Guards Security Services, one of the seven wings of G-7 Securitas Group, which guards top film stars like Preity Zinta and Aishwariya Rai Bachchan: ``Because of our superior technological and human resources, state police forces seek our help.” He claims the agency has even solved cases of abduction and murder.

In addition, there is upgraded technology. “In Madhya Pradesh, Naxalites would hide grenades under corpses. When the police closed in for scrutiny, the mines would explode in their faces. The police wanted to buy very expensive robots, but we suggested they use an inexpensive anchor to do the same job as efficiently. And it has worked.’’

The mushrooming of such private security agencies, has led to other complications, like below par services. Cities are teeming with thousands of men who are hardly trained, under paid, weak of physique, ill-mannered and whose claim to provide security in a rarely washed and stained uniform, could at best be considered laughable. To be sure, some inspiration is coming from the West. In US and Canada, even places as sensitive as airports are managed by private security agencies and the story of the role played – even overplayed – by the US private agency Blackwater is legend.

Most agree that it would take many years and a lot of investment to reach US levels – if at all. In the US, for example, private agencies use satellite imagery and process data which is supplied to the government. Though there have been examples of lapses on their parts, which has led to innocent civilians being bombed in Iraq and Afghanistan, yet, they are able to identify and advice the government on precise locations of terrorism hotspots and exact targets at many occasions.

Already, with top corporates and others seeking protection, the state of high-end security has improved. Ramesh Aiyar, Executive Director of the Topsline Group, claims they have the latest equipment and trained personnel to deal with any situation. “We have the latest gadgets like vapour explosives detection, which makes it possible for us to detect not just explosives but also other chemicals.’’ He claims his company is competent to deal with air rescue and combating biological warfare. For operators like him, the Act could not have come at a more opportune time.
