Who says we cannot laugh through tough times? Gabor George Burt, renowned expert on Blue Ocean Strategy and Value Innovation, seems to agree, and presents a collection of interesting anecdotes on the recession. Imagine a 99 pence store in Southern England driving a pound store out of business within weeks of its launch! Burt also lists a sidesplitting spin on the aviation industry. American Airlines supposedly is planning to charge a fees from all customers “not currently flying, scheduled to fly, or even thinking about flying aboard the commercial carrier!” The ‘lucky ones’ will be chosen randomly from the telephone directory, and the charges would include a $25 tax on customers flying other airlines and a $30 surcharge on customers staying at home during the holidays (!!!!)!

Where’s Burt taking us? Through these spoofs, Burt wants to stress upon the point that companies who diligently follow the blue ocean strategy can ride the recession successfully and be the subject of admiration, rather than jest. But what in heavens is the Blue Ocean strategy?

Consumers are only too happy to switch from Starbucks’ premium coffee to McDonalds’ cheaper alternative, especially at a time when liquidity has become dearer to them, similar to the drift of shoppers from Target to Walmart stores. “We will continue our efforts to elevate the Starbucks Experience and stay true to our core value,” asserts Wendy Pang, Spokesperson for Starbucks when asked about Starbucks’ future strategy. Clearly, the company for now is ‘not’ considering any price reductions to counteract the reduction in customer base... It clearly should think along logical lines, and price changes to revive demand is what comes to the mind of the informed! What say, coffee lover?

With over 1,000 films churned out of our country alone, it’s no surprise that books are often made into movies, and when it’s one like Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Devdas – just one film is so not enough to do the book justice! After Shahrukh Khan’s much-lauded performance as Devdas just 6-7 years ago, the new talented kid on the block, Abhay Deol, is now out to paint the character in a more modern but equally inebriated hues in Dev D. While Vidhu Vinod Chopra had masterfully recreated another of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s book – Parineeta – he is now betting his money on the story Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat. Titled 3 Idiots, the film has Aamir Khan in the lead role. Another of Bhagat’s book – One Night @ the Call Center – was made into the very forgettable film Hello. Vishal Bharadwaj brought Shakespeare’s stories to the common people in India through his films Maqbool and Omkara. And the film which has finally got our countrymen seriously into the race for the Oscars – Slumdog Millionaire – is also based on a book – Q & A by Vikas Swarup.

The story is quite the same in the west too. From romances like Gone with the Wind, Pride and Prejudice, My Fair Lady, to mafia dramas like Godfather to science fiction films like War of the Worlds, Journey to the Centre of the Earth, to fantasy films like The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter – countless classic films have been made out of equally rivetting books.

Used to protectionism for decades, Indian companies were bludgeoned and battered when global competition came to the country. B&E: Any single economic policy you would like to introduce in India? NM: In Gujarat, the development work is moving in the right direction. I want a ‘balanced growth’ here. Balanced means 30% growth in industry, 30% in agriculture and 30% in the service sector. So that, in a situation of famine, the other two sectors can contribute. During recession, the agriculture and service sector can contribute. Secondly, I have also told the Finance Commission and the Planning Commission that the various loans given to the states should not be measured with one yard stick. It should be divided into three parts. Loans given for natural disasters should not have any interest because no one is responsible for these disasters. For development work, interest should be there but more interest should be charged from states who can''t run the state and take loan to pay salaries and fill up their homes.

B&E: Which laws do you think require amendments immediately? NM: You cannot run a nation smoothly by implementing laws of the 19th century in the 21st century. We must update the existing laws. Now tell me, in this era of technology, with Internet and stuff, do you require a radio license? It is irrelevant. But it is there. Supreme Court has asked that if this country is actually secular, then why is there no ‘common civil court’? Someone has to answer that question. A committee of experts should be formed to review all laws. Supreme Court has given its verdict on the ban on cow slaughter. We have implemented this. Why have other states not implemented this? Why is the Central government not doing anything in this regard? At least they should implement what is being led down in the Constitution properly. Each country has introduced tough laws to counter terrorism. Why is our country afraid of introducing tough laws? What is the reason?

The war on terrorism cannot be fought in Afghan villages. Instead, a regional approach was and is needed. It must be concentrated on the sanctuaries of those who train, equip, and motivate the extremists and send them out to hurt us all.

But we were not heard. Regardless of whether that was the result of a lack of knowledge or a lack of will, events have proven us right. Unfortunately, for the past two years, Pakistan has been suffering as much or perhaps more than Afghanistan has suffered. Almost the entire tribal belt along the Pakistan/Afghanistan border is suffering. Just as schools were burned in Afghanistan from 2004 onwards, schools – especially for girls – have been burned even in Pakistan, leaving 80,000 children without facilities. Bridges have been blown up, soldiers and police killed. Bombs have exploded from Karachi to Lahore to Islamabad. The violence has spread to India as well.
