Once in Chapter 11, a merger would further galvanise fundamental change. Three companies are too cumbersome to unite, and Ford has a two-tiered, family-controlled structure, so we’ll leave them out of this solution for now and propose that GM and Chrysler join forces. It’s been estimated that such a merger could create up to $15 billion in synergies from reduced capacity and overhead redundancies – savings that could lower the cost of producing a car, as well as providing for an increase in spending on research and development. Granted, GM and Chrysler could lose several points of market share during the transition, but a merged entity would still end up in a strong position, with more than a quarter of the US market. We have no intention of making this sound easy. Mergers are challenging under any circumstances, and a merger of two companies in bankruptcy would be at the outer limits of difficulty, requiring the commitment of constituencies steeped in old, adversarial ways of doing things. And there would be real pain before a turnaround starts to occur. Shareholders would see their investments evaporate. Thousands of jobs would be lost, and many pensions and other benefits affected. And banks would see much of their debt converted to equity.

Terror cloud & missing umbrellas

The problem with terror insurance cover is that it never covers the whole losses. Terror cover by nature is limited to those risks arising from terrorist hits alone and not to the damages caused by fighting terror or long-term risks to businesses. Further, the depletion of this pool (worth Rs.12 billion with a clause that restricts claim from a single site to just Rs.7.5 billion) is worrisome. Hence the industry is actually in need for a bigger pool to fund the damages as and when required. Not only that, considering the changing dynamics of terrorist attacks and the magnitude of damages sustained, the present premium computation system (pegged at just Rs.0.22 for every Rs.1,000 coverage) too seems obsolete, calling for a quick upgradation.

J. Hari Narayan, Chairman IRDA also accepts the fact stating, “Terror insurance products are also bound to be upgraded and the rate of premia might change depending upon the evolution of new products that the industry will come up with.” And it should be done as soon as possible (ASAP). At the same time, the process of measuring and predicting losses must also be chalked out very carefully to provide a safe umbrella to everyone who needs it, financially at least.

Once vivacious, Chinese economy is finally heading for a halt

Ajoke, we guess! We really don’t remember the last time when we saw the dragon spewing out fire! Not at least this year. China, despite its deep pool of forex reserves ($2 trillion), certainly seems vulnerable to global financial tsunami. And making it more evident is the sharp fall in its GDP growth, from 10.1% in the June quarter to 9% in the September quarter of 2008.

No doubt, a 9% growth is still exceptional by global standards. But for China, which grew by 11.9% last year and hasn’t curved in below 6% since 1990, it’s a big fall. So, the question now arises - is the current slowdown momentary, or the days of double-digit growth finally over? “Right now, we’re in the midst of a historic crisis, and there’s no doubt we’ll be affected. But the days of double-digit growth are still not over,” counters Jiang Jianqing, Chairman, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Newsweek, Dec. 6, 2008). But looking at corrosion in US and EU, China’s two biggest trade partners, achieving a double-digit growth seems really difficult. Even as per Moody’s, “A more severe and protracted global recession could lower China’s GDP growth to the 5-7% range in 2009 and 2010.”

Economic news has still not become a priority for Indian media houses. But stop! Don’t blame them. Isn’t there a fundamental rule that the producer supplies what the market demands? Really, the fact that media doesn’t include much economics in its reportage also goes to prove that for a majority of Indian audience, Economics remains just another academic topic, just academic! This is some kind of a hangover from the Nehru-Gandhi socialistic era, where the state controlled production and economic activities. As a result, the Indian masses started losing sight of all economic perspectives related to governance and policy-making. Today, the mass and media have become too engrossed in mindless political games. Political news has become a murky circus which is only meant to entertain the Indian middle, lower and poor class; it entertains and is then forgotten sooner!

The shocking reality is that neither the currently and stupidly ‘anti-Hindu’ vitriol spewing media nor the spineless so-called high brow intellectuals have the guts to call a spade a spade and a politician a blood sucking vampire who should have been arrested on the day of the attacks, if not years before. The shocking reality is that finally the politicians will win; for the mother whose child is dying of diarrhoea will continue sobbing throughout the night; the father whose son has died of a road accident, will greave for ages; the daughter who sees unemployment taking away every daily meal from her family, will commit suicide; than join a mass movement against politicians. Jew Rabbi Gabriel and Rivka Holtzbergs would leave a legacy in Moshe; for he would personify the number of years India developed... and didn’t change! When he grows up, Moshe might not even remember the wonderful time he spent with his loving parents, but he would surely learn that India, pitiably, forgets and forgives... That is the shocking reality Moshe!

India’s pride of being a ‘young’ nation is just a gas ball of ‘illiteracy’!

Boast about it, folks!!!

Currently, India has a workforce of 549 million. Of this, the total rural workforce accounts for 407 million, now that implies that a whopping 74% of our young and seemingly employable youth live in rural areas. What’s worse, close to a thumping 60% have agriculture as their primary source of livelihood. This indirectly implies that we just have a shameful 40% engaged in basic manufacturing or services. Even by the most optimistic of estimates, market reports suggest that a shameful 40% of the current total workforce is illiterate and another 40% have no high-school degree. That basically means that a shameful 20% (109 million) qualify as high-school passouts (and we boasted about India being a ‘young’ & a ‘knowledge’ economy!)... The proof of the problem lies in the fact that rural India, despite being home to 74% of our workforce, contributes just 18% to India’s GDP!

These simple statistics reveal the deplorable condition of our rural workforce, a story of a hopeless, downcasted Indian future. Today, skill-based training, clubbed with proper awareness about potential markets remain the only panacea. Young, but illiterate – India can’t be proud of it (or is it?!)...
