Mbeki finally mellows down

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

SA may lose democracy credentials due to its political tangles

Thabo Mbeki, former President of South Africa, was forced by African National Congress (ANC) to resign. He has been replaced by Kgalema Motlanthe. Jacob Zuma will replace Motlanthe after he wins the one-sided election, due in April 2009. The leftists within ANC, the Communist Party of South Africa and the federation of trade unions pulled Mbeki down, as they opposed his liberal economic policies. The criticism of the High Court was the proverbial last straw to work against Mbeki. Justice Chris Nicholson accused Mbeki of misusing judicial system to settle political scores with Zuma.

Mbeki was a dedicated ANC comrade who fought for the liberation of black people from the apartheid state. He transformed the image of ANC. He persuaded both international community & white South Africans to set aside their doubts of ANC ruling South Africa. But once he became the President, he centralised control and ran the country in almost Leninist fashion, his detractors allege. Like Nelson Mandela, he too didn’t take any major reformative measure to redistribute the wealth and replicated the neo-liberal economic policies. His strategy to tackle AIDS was a failure. Mbeki's adamancy not to allow the medical community to distribute anti-retroviral drugs to AIDS patients killed millions. The big question now is whether democracy will survive in South Africa. Prof. Hussein Solomon, University of Pretoria, says its uncertain. “The successors, though they say they will redistribute the wealth, will follow Mbeki's policies. If ANC continues to be all powerful without strong opposition party the country may become a banana republic,” he adds. Considering all this, the future of democracy in South Africa remains pretty bleak

Dude, looks like a lady

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

She’s a first-generation woman entrepreneur spearheading a time-honoured family run business. But can this lady really succeed in making the Modi Group a professionally run globally renowned company? Angshuman Paul of 4Ps B&M meets up Himani Modi for some critical questions...

She was amongst the esteemed list of ‘40 Women Under 40’ – a survey conducted by ICMR and 4Ps B&M in July 2007 to find out the country’s top 40 woman leaders and entrepreneurs under the age of 40. And the zeal that she possess to do something innovative bucked up with her deft strategies, make her rightly ranked as one of the best women under the age of 40 within India Inc. So far so good; but as they say, there surely is much a slip between the cup and the lip, and for Himani Modi, simply being the first lady to hold reins is surely not enough qualification to be rated as successful. The critical question that remains to be answered is – will Himani Modi have the wherewithal to achieve the critical mass within the Modi Group to accelerate its movement from a family run business to a professionally run blue chip company?

Coming from a family where the entry of women in business was a strict no, Himani and her elder sister, to their credit, have overcome oodles of hurdles in taking the first step – undoubtedly the toughest – in entering the top management cadres. Himani is now the Executive Director of the Modi Group and believes that those are new businesses and new markets that hold the key to ensuring that the Modi Group catapults to the league of extraordinary global corporations. To that effect, Himani is the creator of four successful businesses within the group, and as revealed by her in an exclusive meeting with 4Ps B&M, it’s the future that excites her more than anything.

After completing her graduation in statistics from the Delhi University, Himani wanted to do something new and innovative. Joining the existing family business was an option, but Himani thought otherwise. She shares, “I really wanted to do something creative; but not belonging to a very professional family was a drawback, as nobody actually encouraged women to have a career.” So at the pristine age of 21, Himani, who had been trained by her father U. K. Modi, made her maiden entry into the business world with a small travel agency.

With gumption and a fair bit of luck, the business proliferated from a sub-agency to an IATA-accredited travel agency, handling airline ticketing and foreign exchange service etc. But her quest to do something new made her search for newer pastures. Adds Himani, “I was in Europe and I really liked the bar culture out there. Then I was in Australia and I really liked the partying environment over there. Subsequently, I tied up with EDG of Australia for starting Barcode – it was a totally new concept in India at that time.” Barcode is a multi-level “next generation lounge bar concept that integrates state-of-the-art interactive games, UV pool tables, live DJs, special effects lighting and LCD screens.”

‘O’h, ‘M’y ‘C’rude! In October 2008, Bajaj Auto notched up two wheeler sales of about 160,000 units.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Indian OMCs are going from bad to worse with global turmoil. There has to be sustained action on making them independent... and profitable too. By Ratan Lal Bhagat

A while back, Rajiv Bajaj had talked to 4Ps B&M and made a forecast that should have sent a chill down the spine of Pankaj Munjal. His famous (neither first, nor last) words were: “Presently 61% of motorcycle volumes come from the 100cc segment and we feel that this segment will reduce to 25% in the next few years.” During that interaction, Rajiv Bajaj, who has an M.S. from Warwick University, had also talked about how the low margins in the entry level 100cc motorcycles were not worth the production and marketing effort. We presume he must have discussed this grand strategy with his brother Sanjiv Bajaj who now handles the financial services arm of the Bajaj Empire. What we really don’t know is if Sanjiv talked to Rajiv about what they don’t teach at Harvard Business School (Sanjiv is an alumnus of Harvard). We also presume Pankaj Munjal was convinced there was no chill running down his spine.

In fact, the message that the market has now sent Rajiv is quite spine chilling. In October 2008, Bajaj Auto notched up two wheeler sales of about 160,000 units. Last year in October, Bajaj had clocked sales of about 250,000 units. That’s an astonishing 35% fall. Sure, these are bad times and India Inc. is being hounded and haunted by the repercussions of the global financial meltdown. Sure even rival Hero Honda and Pankaj Munjal have been affected badly. How badly? Sales in October 2008 for Hero Honda are just 3.5% down at about 365,000 units as compared to last year. Yes! It is 35% versus 3.5%. In fact, combined sales of Bajaj and the number three TVS last October were higher than that of Hero Honda. This year, Hero Honda has sold more than the two put together.

Not that head honchos at Hero Honda are doing cartwheels in jubilation. They too are worried. According to Anil Dua, SVP (Marketing & Sales), Hero Honda Motors, “With the festive season being over now, we do expect to see a slowdown in the industry with the prevailing credit squeeze and interest rates taking their toll on consumer sentiments. Keeping this in mind, we have consciously restricted our dispatch sales in October.”

WHEN CAPITALISTS LOVE SOCIALISTS

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

First things first! Those who believe that the Indian marketer may not be as excited as his global counterpart over the potential that social networking brings to his table, needs to take a cold shower. Internet penetration may be absymal, but popularity of social networking portals among the youth is prompting companies to log in and gain not just crucial consumer insights, but also understand what their employees are either cribbing or going ga-ga about and even to track competition. The numbers are also promising. India Online Report tags the Internet population in the nation at over 49 million, with nearly 77% of them in the 15-34 age group. From aviation czar Jet Airways to desi food giant Nirula’s to youth channel MTV to even FMCG giants like HUL, marketers across the board are climbing the online bus, buzzing with the social marketing fever...

Even before maverick entrepreneur Richard Branson decided to fling himself down from the roof of a 5-Star Hotel in Mumbai earlier this year to announce the launch of Virgin Mobile in India, his Chief Marketing Officer, Prasad Narasimhan had plunged into the social networking galaxy. His raison de`tere? To get a grip on the tastes and preferences of young Indian consumers! Virgin’s Think Hatke tagline was an obvious result. Not so obvious however is the manner in which Narasimhan and his team have been engaging their target audiences on portals like Twitter, Orkut and Facebook ever since. Conversations, contests and communities on these portals are just a few among the many ways that the iconic brand is building the resonance around its brand. “We’ve created over 10 different communities on Orkut with over 5,000 registered members. Twitter even has a Think Hatke ID,” he avers enthusiastically. With thousands of youngsters already in their bag within just seven months of their launch, small wonder that Prasad is now busy signing on the dotted line with a social networking site (he’s not disclosing the name yet) for a pilot ad campaign aimed not only at consumer engagement but also to jump start sales (e-commerce) via their website.

Virgin’s social networking mantra may have been a pre-thought strategy, but Ashish Patel, GM, MTV, was prompted by viewers for putting their popular show MTV Roadies on Orkut. MTV already had a large online community on Orkut, where the editorial team often checked in to see what kids were thinking and saying, for feedback. “We found that some members were running their own online version of Roadies, nominating, voting, doing tasks, eliminating each other. We found it flattering. So we decided to scale up the action and do it as a full fledged promotion online in the form of Roadies Battleground,” he explains. Patel claims to have received “mind blowing” responses for the initiative, with over 100,000 youngsters (their target audience) participating in this online version of Roadies. “We had the kind of entries, tasks conducted that will blow your mind,” he claims, adding that for the final task, the site had the finalists putting cow dung on their faces and getting people to kiss them. “The winner managed to get 862 kisses in 8 hours,” he gushes, saying that some of the stuff was so good that it actually went up on air on MTV.

Pashmina finally gains recognition as Kashmir’s intellectual property!

After four years of struggle, Kashmiri artisans have finally been awarded the intellectual property right of their craft. The Geographical Indication (GI)Registry, a Chennai based institute whose registry applies worldwide, has finally approved a GI for Kashmir Pashmina, thus giving the artisans an exclusive right over the brand.

The branding will wave off the competition posed by Scotland Cashmere and the machine made shawls of Punjab which earlier sold along with the original Kashmir Pashmina brand equity.

“It is the best thing that could happen to Kashmir Pashmina,” says Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry president, Dr. Mubeen Shah. “After the ban on Shahtoosh, which the government of India failed to get lifted, this is the biggest boost that handicrafts sector in Kashmir has got.” It was in 2004 that KCCI proposed to the J&K Government that a Brand Kashmir be created to market Kashmir handmade shawls. “The idea was to create a distinct market position amidst shawls made by mechanised looms which were being sold as Kashmir shawls,” says Dr. Shah.

As the Geographical Indication (registration and protection) Act was already passed in 1999, an organisation of artisans under the name Tahafuz (protection) was formed to apply for the Geographical Indication. But the move met stiff resistance from different quarters, especially the Kashmir Handmade Pashmina Promotion Trust (KHPPT) which argued that GI be only given to handmade shawls and exclude any mechanical intervention in shawl weaving. The group was backed in its effort by the Wildlife Trust of India.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Lack of energy security can jeopardize not only the economy but also the war preparedness of any country. All the more reason as to why India and China continue with their mad rush for oil fields abroad. History, as it is said, often repeats itself. And thus, in not just the blitzkrieg and ‘Shock and Awe’ but also with respect to the propaganda war and the indispensability of the armoured vehicles that one can find the resonance of the World War era in today’s time. War today is more of psychological and less of physical aggression. And the global media has been used deftly by the powers that be to further their own agenda. Tomorrow’s war would be less of physical destruction. All the more reason why the buzzword now is neutron bombs which creates massive shock waves to kill literally every living being but keeps the physical infrastructure intact.

But if today there is something on which the Americans have not yet been able to have complete detection ability, those are the submarines. No wonder that the Chinese have been increasing the number of submarines [more than 60, reportedly] and no wonder the US remains paranoid of that one stray nuclear submarine which could stray on its territory undetected in the case of war.

To conclude, one has to accept that the mother of all doctrines, which finds frequent use by the Americans, is political tier diplomacy – read, reaffirmations of mutually assured destruction. It is said that one should use the most lethal weapon only against an enemy which doesn’t have the power to retaliate with the same vigour and should never dare to do the same on one which can. All the more reason as to why US shows its might over a weak Iraq but invites the North Koreans to the negotiating table and turns a blind eye to the intrasigence of Russia in Georgia. Would Japan have been bombed if it had possessed similar bombs and B-29s to pay the Americans back with compounded interest? We rest our case...

When in doubt, do your own! in Mahabharata, our classy war strategist, dear Krishna, has a world-class archer up his sleeve, Arjuna.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Or, how to intelligently brainwash highly skilled, educated, yet ill-educated youth to do their own people

It’s unbelievable but true that the shrewdest war strategist in history had 16,008 wives! You say that’s hearsay? Wiki confirms it goddamit! And we also know that you’ll be more interested in knowing about how this killing machine got those wives, than about his superb war doctrine! Humans, we tell you... Still, giving you the benefit of gout [kill us!], we’ll come back to our epic. So, in Mahabharata, our classy war strategist, dear Krishna, has a world-class archer up his sleeve, Arjuna. All Arjuna has to do is point and destroy. The only issue is, Mr.Arjuna is a sissy [we’re sorry, had to say it!]. He can kill boar, he can kill bear, and even dear oh deer, but killing his own family [uncles and cousins, if you may]? Do it yourself dude!

All it takes Krishna is one Jeffrey ‘Archer’ novel to convince Arjuna to pack off his whole opposing family to the dry cleaners to ‘change their clothes’. That is the paradigm that started it all. What defines ‘family’ and who are ‘my own people’! Continuing the generic metaphors, ‘family’ can’t be killed! Ergo, if ‘your own people’ cannot be killed, and if you wish to get some member knocked off, the solution is simple. Change the rules of club membership and prove why that member doesn’t belong to ‘your own people’!

Humans have trained, indoctrinated and brainwashed millions of skilled ‘warriors’ into killing ‘their own people’ by using the same bloody intelligent 5000 BC philosophy. In the 20th century, when Americans dropped two atom bombs namely ‘Fatman’ and ‘Little Boy’, the residents of Hiroshima and Nagasaki had been vaporised – or left painfully burnt and alive – even before they had realised what had hit them. 145,000 died in Hiroshima, 74,000 more in Nagasaki. We reproduce a BBC report verbatim as printed on August 6, 1945, the day the bomb was dropped.
