How do you ensure that the incidents like Madras HC are not repeated?

Incidents like these are on the rise because of ideology and political appointments. Bar associations are becoming launching pads for lawyers to enter politics. Big monies are spend on bar association elections. The politicisation of bar associations has to end forthwith. Lawyers have a very important role to play in legal administration and implementation.

What about the lawyers’ ego? Does it lead to clashes all around?

Point is wherever man lives; he takes it to be his own territory. Lawyers too are like that. He lives in the courts and believes it to be his own. But a lawyer or judge has to realise that a public place like court cannot be his own marked out territory. That would not be proper.

What about amendments to the CrPC? That is exercising a lot of lawyers.

This is a lawyers’ fight for survival. It affects their breadlines. The government believes that due to overwork the system is not working well. As a result, in bailable offences, the police itself can issue bails. In the prevailing system, the lawyer takes his fees and organises bails. But post the amendment, the lawyers would have no role to play. This will directly affect their income. But there is no doubt that with this step, the work load on courts would come down and people will get speedy justice.

“The international cotton market has slumped, and a 50 per cent cotton crop failure this season will certainly have a bad effect on Vidarbha farmers. With that, soy bean procurement rate has also crashed. Now debt-ridden farmers will not have any other option than committing suicide,” says the young cotton grower Nitin. As he says, already signs of distress have started sweeping across Vidarbha. Just before entering Jalka, we had visited the village Baggi, near Pandharkawada. On the morning of November 6, 2008, Ashoke Lasamanna Deshettiwar (45), a farmer of this village, as usual went to his field. “Nothing seemed abnormal when he left home for the field. But after two hours, father consumed pesticide and silently returned home. Before we came to realise anything, he lost his breath, and we lost him,” his son Anil says. Anil is an ITI student and his elder brother Sunil is a soldier in the Indian Army. Sunil has been posted in Jammu & Kashmir for the past five years. “I wanted to come home for Diwali. But I got a month’s leave only after Diwali. Within six days of homecoming, I lost my father. I can’t imagine this,” says Sunil.

Deshettiwar had three acres of land in his name and he had around Rs 60,000 to pay back as debt remittance. That debt became his death sentence. “He used to worry miserably about his loans. For the past two years, crops have suffered. Yet, we had no option but to continue farming. We expected a bumper crop this year, and we’d have cleared all our debts. But due to Layla (Pink Bollworm), we have almost lost 60 per cent of the crop this year. I think that broke his back,” says Kaushalya Bai, Ashoke’s widow. She does not cry, her eyes as parched as her fields.

What are we trying to do is invent an idea that will have a much long-lasting influence on how the art scene is to be.

Contemporary dance is rather fascinating; do you think it could, in a way, threaten the declining traditional dance forms?

I think we shouldn’t look at tradition as static, fossilised kind of form… There are myriad art forms across the country… Some reinvent themselves and make themselves relevant; those that don’t, might die – that’s a natural course. The way to keep our inherited forms alive and kicking is by investing in them and trying to transform those.

The onus is to make the work relevant, not maybe for entire masses, but at least for some constituency.

What have been the highlights of the Festival?

The Festival started in 2000. It has developed much since; apart from the performances, this year there were things like colloquium, master classes, dance on camera, writing on dance workshop etc. What are we trying to do is invent an idea that will have a much long-lasting influence on how the art scene is to be. This idea will resurface itself in different forms because lots of artists and connoisseurs are going to take that idea and develop it in their own way according to the context they find themselves in. In that sense it has far-reaching influence on the art and dance scene in the country, and it is hugely successful from that perspective.

This was the period when Monsanto and its Indian partner Mahyco were also carrying out illegal field experiments with genetically engineered Bt cotton. All imports and field trials of geneticallyengineered organisms in India are governed by a law under the Environment Protection Act. We at the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology used these laws to stop Monsanto’s commercialisation of Bt cotton in 1999, which is why approval was not granted for commercial sales until 2002.

The Government of Andhra Pradesh filed an anti-monopolies case, arguing that Monsanto’s seed monopolies were the primary cause of farmers’ suicides in Andhra Pradesh. Monsanto was forced to reduce its prices of Bt cotton seeds. The high costs of inputs were combined with falling prices of cotton due to the $4billion US subsidy and dumping of this subsidised cotton in India became a recipe for indebtedness, and debt is the main cause of farmers’ suicides.

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) has recently released a discussion paper “Bt cotton and Farmers’ Suicides in India: Reviewing the Evidence”. The report manipulates the truth about farmers’ suicides and Bt cotton at every level, saying that such suicides are “a long-term phenomena”, and the “long-term” is 1997-2007. Ten years is not too long in a 10,000-year-old farming tradition. The chronology of Bt cotton introduction is false. The story begins with Monsanto’s illegal Bt trials, not with its commercialisation in 2002. The report states that “In specific regions and years… its failure was mainly the result of the context or environment in which it was introduced or planted; Bt cotton as a technology is not to blame”. This is an interesting argument. A technology is always developed in the context of local socio-economic and ecological conditions. A technology that is a misfit in a context is a failed technology for that context. You cannot blame the context to save a failed technology.

On a cost cutting spree!

It seems that LG has already started experiencing recession blues, as the company has announced plans to cut $2.2 billion in costs this year. This drastic step has been taken in tandem with the company's expectations of registering a 20% decline in sales in the current financial year. Marred by the downturn in the American appliance market, which has declined by about 30% in the recent times, LG plans to slash its costs by reducing its expenses and purchasing costs considerably and simultaneously focusing on its new businesses divisions like solar power. But just these two measures would not be enough for the company to ride the slowdown wave. LG may also look at reducing its head count which stands at 82,000 employees worldwide. However, this may not be a cakewalk in its own country, since the work culture in South Korean corporations restricts job cuts and prefers to reduce workforce through attrition and voluntary retirement. On account of all this, it seems that reducing costs by $2.19 billion shall surely be a difficult job for the company.

Let there be no love IN THE VALLEY of hatered

The East versus West debate is polarising generations over Valentine's Day celebration in Kashmir with its young and old taking opposing positions over the moral behind such cultural influences. With the lover's day approaching, the debate is likely to get intense and take a public posture as moral policing groups in Kashmir have already made their opposition to any such celebration clear.

It is not for the first time that Valentine Day celebrations in Kashmir have come under fire from social groups. In 2006, a couple of dozen black-veiled women stormed gift and stationery shops in Srinagar ten days ahead of lover's day Kashmir. The women burnt Valentine's Day cards and posters to protest a holiday they say 'imposed Western values on Muslim youth'. The women were from Dukhtaran-e-Millat (Daughters of faith), a puritanical women's group founded in 1981. Its leader Aasiya Andrabi, who is least bothered by the 'fundamentalist' label attached to her group, claimed "We will not let anyone sell these cards or celebrate Valentine's Day. These Western gimmicks are corrupting our kids and taking them away from their roots."

Ever since, the opposition to lover's day celebrations has been a yearly affair. In 2007, couples seen in restaurants were beaten up. Another social group, Forum Againat Social Evils (FASE), joined the bandwagon. And this year, Aasiya has already declared war on Valetines Day.

"We will ask the shopkeeper not to display cards and gifts. They should not force us to take action. This is not our culture. Professing illegal love and affection is against our culture," Aasiya Andrabi said in Srinagar. "No religion is in favour of spreading obscenity. If they want to put a stop, they are okay," she adds. Aasiya's assertion that western cultural was swaying the youth away from their roots was in 2006 seen as an assertion of identity by her group. But events more recent point to a bigger divide in the society over the influence of the west on this eastern society. Messages posted on hoardings in a Srinagar locality warned dating couples to stay away from residential areas or face the music. "If you are found with a person of the opposite gender, you will either be handed over to police or your heads will be shaven," the hoardings, which came up at street junctions of Karan Nagar residential area in Srinagar, read. Police was taken by a surprise. Srinagar's Senior Superintendent of Police, Afad-ul-Mujtaba, vowed investigation besides taking the hoardings down. But the residents circuitously favoured the messages on the hoardings.
