India’s pride of being a ‘young’ nation is just a gas ball of ‘illiteracy’!

Boast about it, folks!!!

Currently, India has a workforce of 549 million. Of this, the total rural workforce accounts for 407 million, now that implies that a whopping 74% of our young and seemingly employable youth live in rural areas. What’s worse, close to a thumping 60% have agriculture as their primary source of livelihood. This indirectly implies that we just have a shameful 40% engaged in basic manufacturing or services. Even by the most optimistic of estimates, market reports suggest that a shameful 40% of the current total workforce is illiterate and another 40% have no high-school degree. That basically means that a shameful 20% (109 million) qualify as high-school passouts (and we boasted about India being a ‘young’ & a ‘knowledge’ economy!)... The proof of the problem lies in the fact that rural India, despite being home to 74% of our workforce, contributes just 18% to India’s GDP!

These simple statistics reveal the deplorable condition of our rural workforce, a story of a hopeless, downcasted Indian future. Today, skill-based training, clubbed with proper awareness about potential markets remain the only panacea. Young, but illiterate – India can’t be proud of it (or is it?!)...

The quality of incremental users being added to the network is also becoming a cause for concern. Prakash Gaba, Telecom Technical analyst, agrees, “What we are seeing now are realistic figures and not the inflated figures that we were seeing 10-12 months ago.”

Did I do everything wrong?!

Bush’s past, present and future are all painted in black (pun unintended). He started his presidency under clouds of controversy. Recounting of votes that brought him to power, pushing aside Al Gore, had been questioned. The doubts were that Bush used his brother to win the voters that were not supporting him. Then came the allegations about his past and his involvement in corrupt oil dealings. It was followed by the tragic day of 9/11, which no American can ever forget in his life. Bush at first came out as a hero, with support and in full confidence, showing that he was in full command of things. But his later actions were said to be the outcome of how dumb and undecided he had been.


His war on terror and his actions in Afghanistan at first bore fruits, as Afghanistan shifted from an anti-American to pro-American government. But his forces have still not been able to nab Osama bin Laden – the mastermind behind the 9/11 attack. He tried to redeem himself by attacking Iraq, but unfortunately the entire episode fell flat on his face and instead of becoming a hero, he was vehemently criticised for what is called the worst decision of his tenure. Blaming Saddam Hussein for storing ‘weapons of mass destruction’ and then forging a war on Iraq, even though the UN was against it, showed his arrogance and stubborn attitude. It costed America heavily – both in terms of money as well as people.

Funding by the IMF must be complemented by funding from advanced countries

Even as the squeeze in interbank lending has started to ease after the rescue of financial systems across the advanced countries, falling economic indicators have sent stock markets tumbling. Pressures on emerging-market countries, which were once thought by many to have “decoupled” from the rest of the world, have intensified as foreign loans are called in and assets sold off. With fear gripping consumers, companies, and countries worldwide, talk has turned from a moderate advanced-country recession to a major world depression.

The provision of liquidity, recapitalisation of banks, more uniform deposit insurance across advanced countries – were all correct and necessary measures. But they were only the first instalment on what needs to be done. In advanced countries, fall in asset values and, more generally, fear of what comes next has shattered consumer and business confidence. Consumption is dropping, and companies are cutting investment.

Suicide attacks are growing by the day, in count and fashion!

Who claims that ‘improvement sucks’? Well, we do! And this feeling of disgust surfaces whenever someone realises that the ugliest form of suicide bombing has now truly gone global! What’s worse, the occurrences have not just increased manifold across the globe, but the tactics and techniques have drastically improved over the last few decades too! This clearly poses a serious warning to all in the world to reconsider adequate policy initiatives to prevent the world from such designed evils.

There are various forms of suicide attacks applied by various terror groups. One of the oldest one is the plane attack, Kamikaze, used first by the Japanese against US. Later on, many attackers imitated the same by hijacking planes and using the same as a missile. An example is the 9/11 attack. Worse, terrorism and public means of transportation seem to have some love for each other.

That’s perhaps what many would cry out when told about Microsoft’s latest product launch. But then, this time, it’s really an OS, and one which is friendly as well!

The world of technology is an unforgiving place where long standing monuments (technological, of course!) are felled everyday with little disdain and reputations count for little! Think it just poetic wisdom being sprinkled here? Ask Microsoft! Today, the de facto standard of operating systems, Windows is taking a beating since the advent of Vista. However, this downslide is not a very new event. Vista’s criticism plagued birth and childhood (will it ever grow old?) saw consumer sentiment growing so bitter that even the release of Service Pack 1 (which righted a lot that made early incarnations of Vista the favorite whipping boy of the masses), failed to change the barrage of disapproval headed its way.

Too often labeled as being slow to respond, Microsoft has decided to shrug off all the complaints and start afresh. And the first step that Microsoft has taken in this regard is something very uncharacteristic – a release of the ‘pre-beta’ version of its next-generation OS, simply called Windows 7, the release time-frame for which is “in the year ahead,” as per Steve Ballmer, CEO, Microsoft.
