Suicide attacks are growing by the day, in count and fashion!

Who claims that ‘improvement sucks’? Well, we do! And this feeling of disgust surfaces whenever someone realises that the ugliest form of suicide bombing has now truly gone global! What’s worse, the occurrences have not just increased manifold across the globe, but the tactics and techniques have drastically improved over the last few decades too! This clearly poses a serious warning to all in the world to reconsider adequate policy initiatives to prevent the world from such designed evils.

There are various forms of suicide attacks applied by various terror groups. One of the oldest one is the plane attack, Kamikaze, used first by the Japanese against US. Later on, many attackers imitated the same by hijacking planes and using the same as a missile. An example is the 9/11 attack. Worse, terrorism and public means of transportation seem to have some love for each other.

That’s perhaps what many would cry out when told about Microsoft’s latest product launch. But then, this time, it’s really an OS, and one which is friendly as well!

The world of technology is an unforgiving place where long standing monuments (technological, of course!) are felled everyday with little disdain and reputations count for little! Think it just poetic wisdom being sprinkled here? Ask Microsoft! Today, the de facto standard of operating systems, Windows is taking a beating since the advent of Vista. However, this downslide is not a very new event. Vista’s criticism plagued birth and childhood (will it ever grow old?) saw consumer sentiment growing so bitter that even the release of Service Pack 1 (which righted a lot that made early incarnations of Vista the favorite whipping boy of the masses), failed to change the barrage of disapproval headed its way.

Too often labeled as being slow to respond, Microsoft has decided to shrug off all the complaints and start afresh. And the first step that Microsoft has taken in this regard is something very uncharacteristic – a release of the ‘pre-beta’ version of its next-generation OS, simply called Windows 7, the release time-frame for which is “in the year ahead,” as per Steve Ballmer, CEO, Microsoft.

Twitter, a microblogging service that has turned out to be an international hotspot for millions of conversations,

The ‘New Media’, as some like to dub it, has won over all the traditional sources of power influence for Obama. Special-interest groups and lobbyists now face the reality of an entirely different ecosystem, one of transparency, and a president who owes them no favours. On Facebook, where a count of those who had voted was constantly updated on the fly, 5 million people had declared they had exercised their franchise. Twitter, a microblogging service that has turned out to be an international hotspot for millions of conversations, tweeted long and proud as millions sent out messages declaring not just that they had voted but also about such issues as voter problems at various booths and conditions at polling places. Its 3 million-odd users delivered a steady stream of political banter throughout the day and on websites like Election Protection, voters either called-up or emailed reports about various problems they encountered. It was all about a democracy at work, both in the virtual and real world.

These are times when technology has lifted politics off the streets. Why, didn’t you see? Obama’s Facebook profile just saved his day at the polls!

How has mobile changed the communication scenario in India?
The success story of Indian telecom sector is based on liberalisation, promotion of competition, progressive policies of government and the positive regulatory measures put in place by TRAI. These initiatives paved the way for competition through private participation in the telecom sector, particularly in mobile services. Initially, mobile services were thought of as a premium service for the high-end of the society. But now all strata are using mobile phones and it’s a tool for communication for the common man. Moreover, developments in telecom sector have a multiplier effect on the country’s economy and its contribution to national GDP is about 3%.

What growth can we expect?
There are numbers that show India added 10 million wireless subscribers in October and we have been recording 7-10 million additions per month for the past two months. We would continue to see this kind of growth further for quite some time and the reason for this would be that the tele-density in India has still not reached a significant level. In fact, we till now have reached only 30-31% of penetration and as such there is lot of scope. Moreover, in future, the maximum growth in the sector would come from the rural areas.

... and the country has no answer; not even to any event that occurs by the calendar! India, get up!

India’s holistic performance evaluation remains incomplete without analysing its contributions towards environmental protection and safety. And in this context, India is seriously struggling to protect the environment. It lags far behind some of the poorer Asian and African countries. Though India has incorporated some policy initiatives in this regard, it remains grossly incapable of taking radical steps towards environmental protection, thus failing to make it a die-heart priority.

Its environmental performance can be best evaluated on the basis of some important indicators. The Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI), released during 1999-2005 jointly by Yale University’s Centre for Environmental Law and Policy, Columbia University’s Centre for International Earth Science Information Network and the World Economic Forum – focusses on the country’s performance in endowing natural resource, pollution level, protecting environment, reducing environmental stress, human vulnerability on environmental stress and social and institutional capability to respond disasters. The study revealed that India ranked amongst the worst performing states (101th out of 117 nations) in 2005. Later, another index (Environmental Performance Index) was prepared by Yale University in 2008. It was a more performance-oriented index in which India ranked 120th out of 149 countries! In spite of having a prominent voice in international community like being a member of the the International Panel of Climate Change of the UN, India ranks below many smaller and poorer countries like Vietnam (76th), Indonesia (102th) or African countries like Tunisia (60) and Gabon (64). Though India has ranked 5th in another index called Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) alongwith the top performing European countries, and better than any other emerging economies, it remains largely incapable of preventing disasters and efficiently saving humans. It goes unsaid that othe country to prevent economic casualties too remains highly crippled. The country has also been ranked a hopeless 104th in ‘how green is your country’ index.

Despite the crunch, R-Power should be able to manage the debt well

loves company (pun intended); and it seems to be sticking hard and fast to Indian firms nowadays; even though the feeling is (obviously) not mutual! And it would take the most enterprising of business minds to defy misery when the liquidity problem is becoming a serious bottleneck for expansion.

Even so, some players, particularly the larger ones, seem undeterred. Anil Ambani spearheaded Reliance Power (R-Power), has recently arranged a tie up for a $2-billion financial debt package for its Sasan power project from the domestic market. R-Power has been permitted to raise debt for the 4,000 MW ultra mega power project (UMPP) through ECBs. Having a debt equity ratio of 75:25, the Rs.195 billion project thus requires the company to muster around Rs.140 billion as debt. The company has secured a long-term loan from SBI worth around Rs.35 billion. Power Finance Corporation, Rural Electrification Corporation, India Infrastructure Finance Company and Hudco are expected to source another Rs.70 billion. The understanding that the debt would be replaceable with foreign funding at an appropriate time.

Doesn’t it seem risky in these times? Supports N. Wadhwa, Director, SKI Capital Limited, “Looking at the current global scenario, managing a debt with interest rates between 12% and 13% is an uphill task.” Nevertheless, the unprecedented over-subscription (by 71 times) of R-Power IPO and the Crisil grading of ‘4/5’ (above average fundamentals) reflect strong basics. Even though returns may take quite a while, R-Power already has the good will and financial stability to back it up. Notwithstanding the fact that India desperately needs power, this debt tie up by R-Power seems well on track to defy the current downturn.

Indian banks must walk the tightrope between caution and growth in their credit disbursals

“I assure depositors that their money is safe.” Amid a milieu wherein international financial institutions are gripped by extreme risk aversion in the wake of spectacular failures, such a statement from the PM should go a long way in calming jittery Indian depositors. But the moot question, which many appear to be asking is: Can the Indian banks be considered safe? Indisputably, the scenario in US bears little similarity to India, but rumours to the contrary abound. RBI has called for “intensified watchfulness with readiness to act swiftly to cushion the economy and the domestic financial system from external shocks.”

But are such fears unwarranted? On a yearly basis, credit extended by scheduled commercial banks has increased by 29.4%; such growth is a cause of concern for RBI. And why not, the financial crisis has reinforced risks of allowing rapid and unbridled credit expansion. This represents a point of ambiguity, as on one hand, the RBI and the ministry of finance is persuading banks to increase lending and on the other, it proposes to “monitor the rate of credit growth and credit quality.” Perhaps it is this double standard that led Dr. Soumendra K. Dash, Chief Economist, CARE Ltd., to say, “Though highly capitalised, banks have become pessimistic in terms of lending.”

On parameters of financial strength, Indian banks are robust. All commercial banks in India have a capital adequacy ratio above 10% (as against Basel Accord requirement of 8%). Also, the regulatory mandate of keeping 25% of net demand and time liabilities as SLR and 6.5% as CRR provides inherent strength to Indian banks and the inter-bank market is functioning smoothly.

As Dr. Dash puts it, “Apprehension is the cause of worry.” Indian banks need to learn lessons from the US crisis; but that does not mean they become so overcautious that growth suffers. They must walk the tightrope & maintain just the right balance.

It pays to love George Bush!

The deal went ahead despite the efforts of China to equate India with Pakistan with regard to the nuclear sanctions. It was part of the greater Chinese policy to contain India. Transfer not just of conventional weapons but also nuclear weapons designs and technology to Pakistan is a part of this policy. The Chinese in this case worked very closely with Pakistan in approaching members of the NSG over the past three years with the hope of persuading members to oppose this deal. The strategy was to delay the process till there was a valid criteria an for vindicating a similar exemption for Pakistan. The failure of these attempts were a slap on the face of Chinese in their efforts to contain India.

It is now evident that given India’s growing economic strength & its developing military potential, the world is not going to join them in trying to contain a rising power. This agreement makes a material difference to the strategic nuclear programme. In any case, the eight reactors that we were going to use to manufacture nuclear weapons remain outside the scope of international statements. I would not say this deal has given us any military leverage, but what it has done is to get 45 countries to tacitly acknowledge that India will essentially remain a nuclear power. The end of the sanctions came about primarily because George Bush has turned out to be the most India-friendly President we have seen. Unlike past US Presidents, who had focused their attention on forcing India to “cap, roll back and eliminate its nuclear weapons programme”, Bush has turned out to be the first US President who finds that the complementaries of interest are so much with India that India’s nuclear weapons programme should not come in the way.

In some ways it could be an asset to US’s interests. On our West, Afghanistan and Pakistan have become epicentres of global terrorism. To our east, countries like Bangladesh and Myanmar are hardly stable. And in the Indian Ocean region, where Somalia is becoming dysfunctional and Ethiopia is unstable, India is seen as constituting an essential partner for stability and economic growth.
