School for Terror?

ZEE BUSINESS BEST B SCHOOL SURVEY

The arrest of a serving army officer for bomb blasts and his links with a private military school suggest a conspiracy larger than thought before. TSI's Danish Riyaz and Malik Rashid Faisal probe deeper from the spot

The film Shaurya – about army men wearing their religious affiliations on their sleeves – had bombed at the box office. But the real life blast drama, allegedly played out by the likes of Lieutenant Colonel Srikant Purohit and retired Major Ramesh Upadhyay, has been terrifyingly successful. And, yes, nobody would ever have known who precisely directed the Malegaon real time script had not the blast bike been identified as Sadhvi Pragya’s. For it was only after the arrest of Pragya and her accomplices that the sleuths were firmly launched on the army link to the terror trail. What’s more, the evidence gathered so far suggests they masterminded several other blasts as well. Interestingly, it is also now mentioned in some reports that one point from which some of the plans originated was the Bhonsala Military School in Nashik! It is alleged that this is where these army men and their cohorts 'trained' the saffron bombers.

As the school, established way back in 1937 by RSS ideologue Dr B.S.Moonje, evolved, its agenda purportedly came to borrow more and more from Germany’s Nazi and fascist Italy’s Brown Shirt training schools. In fact, some of the extreme criticism has also asserted that the school, set up initially to instill in its students the spirit of patriotism, has slowly but surely morphed into "a killing machine of the Hindutvawadis." Though this may or may not be correct, repeated calls to the school for an interview were not returned.

During a recent visit, however, TSI found that the school campus spread over hundreds of acres had a range of curricula on offer – and enrolled students from pre-nursery to matriculation levels. Yet, common to them all was an almost overbearing emphasis on physical training. Also, many of the students of Shishu Vihar were locals from middle class backgrounds. Others came from outside the district – all of them drawn by the Spartan discipline and quality education the school reportedly provides.

The military training school 20 yards from Shishu Vihar, watched over by several vigilant guards, is set in lush green compounds. Its halls are adorned with photos of RSS leaders like Savarkar.

The students’ day begins at crack of dawn with physical exercises and horse riding lessons. The school’s physical trainer, Sanjay Pagare – a retired army man - at first declined to answer our queries. And when, after great reluctance, he did slightly open up, nothing new was revealed. Said Pagare,“I have been here for a year now and have never come across any suspicious activities. (B.S. Moonje was this school’s founder and it is named after him). He always stressed on spreading communal amity. Now the school’s fair name is being sullied, that’s all.”

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Sleepless in siachen

We first reached Base Camp, at 12,000 feet. Our instructor Lance Naik Mohammad Latief Khan told us not to get adventurous, and stay as cool as possible, but at this place, where one felt so close to the Almighty, I wanted to walk all over the mesmerising terrain. But within the first hour, we thanked Khan: we were getting breathless. We had to stay there for four days to get acclimatised. And it was then that we saw the porters and the link commanders. The first were people who carried our heavy luggage, scampering about like mountain goats; the others were soldiers who knew the way between camps blindfolded; they have to work practically blindfolded when heavy snow obliterates all landmarks. Hence, if Almighty was just within reach in the sky so close above, he had already sent his seconds-in-command to us as porters and link commanders. And all their hopes lay in OP Baba.

He was a soldier – Om Prakash – who died fighting the enemy alone sometime in the mid-1980s. After a while, he started coming in the dreams of soldiers, often forecasting trouble and guiding them out of it. From then on, no team goes up or leaves Siachen without propitiating the spirit of OP Baba at the picturesque temple, an all-religion affair created by the army. We did the same.

As one walked, the toughness of the terrain unravelled itself. Feet felt lead-cast. Besides, some unfathomable feelings gripped our hearts when we walked on the ladders over crevices; we could hear the sound of gurgling water somewhere deep down below but couldn’t see it: they told us that anyone hitting that bottomless pit would reach temperature levels of minus 200 degrees. Two months before we reached, the bodies of two soldiers who died falling in those crevices 14 years ago, had been recovered, still un-decomposed.

On the trek, our truest friends were the porters, and no one was so grateful to porter Tsengey than TSI lensman Mukunda De. Here, the “safety rope” is the margin between life and death, so one has to cling on to his rope all the time. But with a 12 kg camera bag, his own 16 kg luggage, and a steady rush of chilling wind, Mukunda had the onerous job of taking pictures. So when Tsengey took away his luggage, he realised the core value of the word 'relieved'.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Living up to her Dad's name!

Deepika Padukone is learning quite a few things from her forthcoming film Chandni Chowk to China's co-star Akshay Kumar. For one, the dusky beauty is learning martial arts for the movie. But while doing a stunt she twisted her left ankle, which will now remain sprained for life, and she is unable to sit cross-legged and put weight on her left leg. But now this daughter of a sports-person wants to do a sports-based film, which would require her to go for rigorous training. That’s what we call a good sport!

It's not just America that is celebrating the historic Obama victory. The entire world is in raptures, reports Solana Larsen in this special despatch

IIPM Ranked No1 B-School in India

And Obama it is!

But such a line could not have worked with Aditi Nadkarni and thousands like her. Nadkarni has been living in the US for over seven years, and never before has been so immersed in an election as in this one. It was chiefly her own experience as an outsider in a country, the majority of which is Christian and white, that inspired her to support the Illinois senator who was born to a black Kenyan father and white Kansas mother.

Said Nadkarni: "There is a degree of xenophobia among Americans — what is not like them is viewed with an element of suspicion. I think Obama is going to change that." Nadkarni was talking about how the public discourse on immigration affected her daily interactions with the American people. While she acknowledged that some Indian Americans had conflicting views on the candidate best equipped to address the key issues affecting them — such as the Indo-US civilian nuclear treaty and security — she herself never changed her mind about Obama.

A pre-election poll by the non-profit organization Bridging Nations immediately before the election had predicted that fully 81 per cent of Indian-Americans favoured Obama and Joe Biden, with barely 19 per cent rooting for John McCain and Sarah Palin.

McCain's steep drop in popularity in recent months is being blamed on the ongoing economic slump that brought down Bush's approval rating to below 30 per cent. Worse, McCain's choice of the inexperienced Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate found few takers among large sections of traditional Republican voters.

A national election exit poll conducted on behalf of AP and other major US TV networks said responses from nearly 10,500 voters after voting suggested that Obama had succeeded in mobilizing African-American voters to an unprecedented extent. He won 95 per cent of the black vote against McCain's 4 per cent. Moreover, Obama was also a major hit with the Hispanic voters whom Bush had partly succeeded in winning over in 2004. McCain led slightly among white voters.

But no surveys or polls are needed to conclude that the Americans know just what is good for them and the rest of the world. The melting pot that is the US of A has shown that the man holding its top job can be of any origin — and that black is better than white if it can deliver better.

where's the food mr. zardari?

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Urgent provisions needed to rescue the poor and destitute

On the footpath outside Sabir Hotel in Karachi, situated on the proximity of Jamia Cloth Market, off MA Jinnah Road, gather hundreds of poor people every day, anxiously waiting for some philanthropist to order free food for them.

A couple of years ago, only drug addicts would throng the hotel, but with inflation now at 24.5 per cent, large numbers of people from the working class and the lower middleclass, including women, are seen outside Sabir Hotel. Similar crowds can be seen in other parts of the city, where people wait for free food because they are unable to afford it with their meagre incomes.

"The exact figures will be available when the Economic Survey is published, but an estimated five per cent of the population has been added to below the poverty line in Pakistan," Dr Kaiser Bengali, an eminent economist told TSI. According to a UNDP report, 65.5 per cent of the 160 million population of Pakistan earns less than two dollars a day and they are defined as living below the poverty line.

Haris Gazdar, an economist associated with Collective for Social Science Research based in Karachi agrees that at least five per cent additional population has been pushed below the poverty line in recent months. He said it was high time that the government introduce an employment guarantee scheme on the lines provided by India to combat poverty. "In fact, the Pakistan People's Party manifesto has such a provision, but it has not been implemented as yet," he said. Also he added that the poorest sections of the populace should be provided social security and a cash support programme, while their children should be ensured food support at schools.

Bengali who has been the National Coordinator Benazir Income SupportProgram (BISP) and Member National Finance Commission, believes the extent of economic crisis in Pakistan today is structural. He points out that it was in the making for 30 years but was aggravated during the last eight years. "Without the policies followed in the last eight years, we would have lasted a few more years but we were heading for a doom," he told The News on November 2.

"In the last 30 years, we have not invested in our infrastructure, both physical and human. A lot of our infrastructure is non-productive and is falling apart. The basic problem is that the economy is not producing what it ought to. Our annual food production growth rate is one per cent, population is growing at 2.5 per cent per annum, so shortages are bound to occur," he said. Bengali believes that the Benazir Income Support Program would enable the poorest segment of the society, that earns Rs 5,000 per month, to boost its income by 20 per cent. He dismisses the notion that the bulk of the money earmarked for the scheme would be appropriated by a bureaucracy that is corrupt to the core.

"The money will be directly transferred from the ministry of finance to beneficiaries through an electronic postal system," he argues. About 3.5 million people would benefit from the scheme. However, given the track record of Pakistan, one could hardly believe that the bulk of the amount earmarked for families living below the poverty line would not be misappropriated by a corrupt bureaucracy working under still more corrupt ministers.

'God forbid if they provoke us'

Sishir Parkar, General Secretary, MNS speaks to TSI

There is violence in other states too. Do you think violence here is being blown out of proportion?
Maharashtra has a history of traitors. Even some family members of Shivaji Maharaj were traitors. So people can can say and write anything about Maharashtrians.

Why this anger against north Indians?

We are not against them. We are angry with the spineless politicians of Maharashtra. In Delhi, the power minister is Sushil Kumar Shinde and we have a power crisis. The Home Minister is Shivraj Patil and terrorism is at all time high. The agriculture Minister is Sharad Pawar and more farmers are committing suicide. We want a new breed of leadership.

Are you against Chhath festival?

We are not against any festival. But do you find Jayalalitha, Mamta Bannerjee or Narendra Modi come to Mumbai to celebrate local festivals of their regions? Don't come to Maharashtra for indulging in dadagiri. We will not accept that.

What is your goal?

In every state in India, the locals get preference for jobs and other avenues of employment. We want the same to apply for our Maharashtrian people in this state.

Will there be violence during the coming Chhath festival?

We pray to God that 'they' will see sense this time. But then, if they provoke us....

MSD: Captain Cool & perfect

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

India has had a spate of excellent captains, starting with tiger pataudi, and now dhoni leads from the front, reports satish Chapparike

Nine Indian fielders surrounding an Australian batsman in a test match is not a common scene. After Zaheer Khan cleaned up Brett Lee in the second innings of Australia in the Mohali Test, it looked like a complete rout. Nine Indian fielders surrounded incomer Mitchell Johnson. An umbrella field to wrap up Australian innings! The man in command: MS Dhoni The Indian cricket team looked like Steve Waugh’s mighty Australians or Clive Lloyd's good old West Indian Titans. That too, facing the Mighty Aussies!

Sachin Tendulkar’s world record, Saurav Ganguly’s memorable century, Amit Mishra’s dream debut, Gautam Gambir’s block buster, Ishant Sharma-Zaheer Khan-Harbhajan Singh's perfect combination in bowling… in the end, in terms of runs the biggest cricketing victory for Indian team in history. The Mohali Test. This match produced a bundle of records. More than that, this victory showed us the new face of the Indian team. Though Indians looked a little pale in the Bangalore Test, they fired back in Mohali.

After the match, Australian captain Ricky Ponting himself admitted “India played more aggressively and got the upper hand from the first session of the first day. They looked like a entirely different outfit in this match, and we failed badly in all the departments. The Indian team truly deserves this fantastic victory." It was wholesome appreciation.

The way India played at Mohali surely shows that the evolutionary process in Indian cricket, in personal and as well as team level, has reached great heights. The stand-in Captain MS Dhoni lead from the front and gave some strong signals to everyone. He especially showed his real aggressive and compact character as a Captain. No doubt team Captain Anil Kumble’s dressing room guidance contributed to this also. But the way Dhoni carried himself in the Test gave a hint of the emergence complete captain in Indian cricket. As the ODI and T-20 team captain, he has already shown the world he is one of the best. In the real test of cricket, in Tests too he now looks like a perfect leader.

If we go back to history, India has produced some outstanding cricket captains, like Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, Ajit Wadekar, Kapil Dev, Saurav Ganguly and Anil Kumble. We have seen, so to say, from ‘Tiger’ to ‘Royal Bengal Tiger’. In the early seventies when ‘Tiger’ Pataudi took over Indian captaincy he was barely 21 years old. But he led in India in 40 Test matches and was the most celebrated Indian captain of post Independence era. He was the man who brought out India from a sea of the defeat and made sure that the Indian cricket team can win a Test.

He brought self belief in Indian cricket. His successor Ajit Wadekar also pumped lot of self belief by winning test matches in England and West Indies. Then came the era of Kapil Dev, the greatest all rounder India has ever produced, and this man leading India in the 1983 World Cup victory electrified India and revolutionised Indian cricket. He was 'captain courageous'. Though as Test captain his records are not so impressive, he was a true champion and a natural player and a great leader. That made him stand apart as captain and he changed Cricket in India for ever. After Kapil, as a Test captain, Mohammed Azaruddin had a wonderful stint, but match fixing allegations took all his credits away. And yet, we cannot ignore his achievements.

Are you ready to get fired?

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Global economic turmoil is taking its toll across industries and economies. And this could have terrible consequences for employment even in India, notes Shashank Tripathi

American neoclassical economist Paul A. Samuelson was absolutely right when he famously said, “What we know about the global financial crisis is that we don't know very much.”What started at a very small scale in August last year in form of bad debts due to mortgage crisis in the world’s oldest democracy, The United States, has today transformed into a gigantic Chimera ready to decimate anything and everything coming its way. It’s after affect in form of credit crisis threatens to leave large parts of the entire world economically paralyzed. And its hard to find a country that has not come in the firing line, only the degree varies. In fact, economies like Iceland, Pakistan, Ukraine and Egypt are on the verge of bankruptcy.

The outright affect of this economic mayhem has been on the global industries and the people working there. Real estate, Information Technology, aviation, hospitality, to name a few; are facing the brunt of the slowdown. The losses have been so humongous that across the globe companies are mulling over every possible cost cutting measure left right and center to tide over these rough times.

A company exists for its stakeholders. And employees come quite prominently on that list in good times. But when the going gets tough, the tough get their people going! After all, there are the investors to answer to. Due to this basic corporate tenet, that's brimming with logic but scarce on Emotional Quotient (EQ), jobs are being slashed across sectors as companies desperately seek to rationalise their earlier excesses.

The best example to both describe and understand this logic is the recent alliance of the foe-truned-friend companies, Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines, who announce an informal alliance for code sharing on domestic and international routes, cross-selling of flight inventories and route rationalization. Though, this would save a lot of money for both the airlines, this would eventually result into huge lay offs. And the failed attempt by the jet Airways to throw out its almost 2000 people supports this fact. Actually these sort of alliances are cartels in disguise, wherein companies come together to form a monopoly. But this often results into internal restructuring and causing job losses. In such industries, job losses are a bigger scourge, as C. K. Santhakumar, Director, TRITIUM Consulting of Bangalore told TSI, “ The people who are thrown out of jobs (in sectors like hospitality) normally do not have skill-sets for being employed elsewhere. Hence recruitment agencies find it difficult to get them alternate job.” When it comes to internal restructuring, a Deutsche Bank report that was released in October this year concludes that internal restructuring has caused close to 73% of job cuts at European banks since 2002. So most certainly, employees are the ones in trouble.

Alexander to Aristotle

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

King Philip of Macedon wanted Alexander to be everything which he never was. That is precisely why he hired Aristotle to train his heir apparent. All his life, Philip had to bear the jibes of Greeks and Athenians that he was just a pretentious barbarian. And he wanted Alexander to be a real Greek. The following letter was written by Alexander during his stay in Susa where he discusses every aspect of his expedition to his beloved teacher, including his take on the rumour that he considers himself the son of Zeus Ammon and real heir of Achilles.

To Aristotle of Stagirus, director of the school at Athens

Susa, 332 BC

My great and beloved teacher, dear Aristotle!

It is a very, very long time since I wrote to you; but as you know I have been over-occupied with military matters, and while we were marching through Hyrcania, Drangiana, and Gedrosia, conquering Bactria, and advancing beyond the Indus, I had neither the time nor the inclination to take up my pen. I remember that year ago I wrote you an absurd and enthusiastic letter on the tomb of Achilles; I was on the threshold of my Persian expedition, and I vowed then that my model for life should be the valiant son of Peleus. I dreamed only of heroism and greatness; I had already won my victory over Thrace, and I thought that I was advancing against Darius at the head of my Macedonians and Hellenes simply to cover myself with laurels worthy of my ancestors. You would have said, my dear Aristotle, that my principal political and strategic aim - namely, the final expulsion of Persia from Hellenic waters - was now completely achieved. But with the conquest of Asia Minor a new situation arose: our new shores might be threatened from the south - that is, from Phoenicia or Egypt; Persia might receive reinforcements or material from there for further wars against us. It was thus essential to occupy the Tyrian coasts and control Egypt; in this way we became masters of the entire littoral. But simultaneously a new danger arose: that Darius, relying on his rich Mesopotamia, might fling himself upon Syria and tear our Egyptian dominions from our base in Asia Minor. I therefore had to crush Darius at any cost; I succeeded in doing this at Gaugamela; as you know Babylon and Susa, Persepolis and Pasargadae, dropped into our lap.

I returned to Susa. I could be satisfied at having conquered such an empire for my Macedonians and Hellenes. But so as not to have to rely entirely on my exhausted people I took thirty thousand Persians into my army; they are good soldiers and I urgently need them for the defense of my Eastern frontiers. And do you know, my old soldiers are extremely annoyed about it.

Yes, my dear master, I have had myself proclaimed god; my good Eastern subjects kneel to me and bring me sacrifices. It is a political necessity if I am to have the requisite authority over these mountain shepherds and these camel drivers. How far away are the days when you taught me to use reason and logic! But reason itself bids me adapt my means to human unreason. If I ask you now as my wise friend and guide to prepare the way by philosophy and to justify my proclamation as god in such a way as to be acceptable to my Greeks and Macedonians, I do so as a responsible politician and statesman; I leave it to you to consider whether you wish to undertake this task as a reasonable and patriotic work and one which is politically necessary.

Greetings, my dear Aristotle,

From your Alexander

Class Appeal

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Labelled a romantic comedy, the latter was definitely missing in Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. To be precise, in the span of 1 hour 35 minutes, there were exactly 4 scenes that elicited even a giggle. However, for a debutant director, Bharat Narulli does a good job in depicting the London of 1930s.

The movie is set in 1939 just before the commencement of World War II and revolves around a day in the life of penniless Guinevere Pettigrew (Frances McDormand) whose only concern is where she could get her next meal after she is fired from her fourth job. When the head of the employment agency also throws her out, she flees with the card of a potential employer and lands at the house of an aspiring American singer and actress, Delysia Lafosse’s (Amy Adams) not knowing that the job is of a social secretary and not a nanny. Pettigrew learns of the mayhem that is Delysia’s love life (who, involved with three men is caught between love and career) and decides to help her. Guinevere witnesses two sides of London, and goes from streets to the sophisticated social circuits, and sees how the rich and the famous remain unaffected by the harsh realities of the world.

The story is nothing but old wine in a new bottle, the dialogues are often mundane and at times the movie drifts from being a light-hearted comedy to being introspective and serious and ends up becoming something that will perhaps only find a niche audience. Amy Adams, like she did in ‘Enchanted’ lights up the screen with her fresh face and effervescence while Frances McDormand’s transition from being dowdy and unkempt nanny to a chic social secretary showcases her talent. However, wearing two hats of a distinctly light hearted comedy and a sensitive romantic tale, the movie ends up confused. Much like Miss Pettigrew herself!

Prophetic ‘Paul’ gets the best

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

The academician and not the critic gets the Nobel

US Economist and noted columnist, Paul Krugman, credited with integrating disparate fields of international trade and economic geography, has been awarded the Alfred Nobel prize in Economics. Krugman, better known for his fierce criticism of US President George W Bush’s administration, is a professor of Economics and International affairs at Princeton University and a regular columnist with New York Times and The Sunday Indian (TSI). Invariably his columns highlight one single motif: the economic policies pursued by the US administration has sparked off the current financial crisis. Nevertheless, it is the academician and not the critic Krugman who has been awarded the Nobel prize.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, decided to award Krugman for his ground-breaking theory on international trade practices. Krugman propounded this theory in his paper published in 1979 in which he argued that consumers want diverse products and countries benefit from economies of scale. This allowed the lowering of prices and greater product diversity as compared to a situation where each country produces for its domestic market without international trade.

Krugman was among the first to predict the Asian financial crisis of 1997-98. A critic of fixed exchange rate system maintained by some countries, he predicted the fall of Long Term Capital Management even before it went under, because of its dependence on returns from fixed exchange rates. During his visit to India in 1997, Krugman advised that weak banks in India should be closed and not kept operating simply because they provide jobs.

A passionate Bush critic, he opposed the $700 billion bailout package arguing that it will only help increase the US deficit. It is a well argued fact that decreased collection of taxes, increased government expenditure and the war in Iraq are slowly taking US to the brink of disaster.

Krugman is amongst the few academician who dominate popular consciousness. A YouTube video featuring Krugman on “Meet the Press” has been till date viewed by more than 100,000 people. That makes Krugman globally Noble!
