Reformed? Not yet

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

UNITED NATIONSUN’s real reforms have been kept untouched

Of late, there has been major attempts to make the United Nations (UN) a more vibrant and strong organisation. In this regard quite a few reports have been submitted. Noted among them are, Investing in the UN: For a Stronger Organisation Worldwide, The Comprehensive Review of Governance and Oversight and Review of the UN Internal Justice System. In the first report, the summary of the report of the Secretary General states, ‘ from the organisation that emerged from .’ And then it goes on to state, ‘The United Nations, in short, is no longer a conference-servicing organisation located in a few headquarter locations. It is a highly diverse organisation working worldwide to improve the lives of people who need help.’ Well, we all know how much the UN works for the people and how often its missions have been successful.

But in essence can any reform of the UN be eventually be beneficial for the people at large unless the very charter of the UN is changed? Well, consider this, Article 25 of Chapter V of the Charter of the UN categorically states, ‘The Members of the United Nations agree to accept and carry out the decisions of the Security Council in accordance with the present Charter.’ This essentially has been the crux of the problem. Anything which is not in congruence with aspirations of the members of the Security Council, has not seen light of the day. Not just this, the veto power of the permanent members and especially of the US makes it a point that the UN essentially follows what is dictated by it. Net result? Successive Secretary Generals of the UN have been intelligently chosen from countries like Norway, Sweden, Burma, Austria, Peru, Egypt, Ghana & now South Korea. Now here’s the catch: Sweden and Norway would always be more than happy to be subservient to the US and NATO while Peru, Egypt & Ghana simply don’t matter. South Korea for the obvious reasons is more than willing to accede to American demands or rather dictums.

The Security Council which has a major say in the selection of the UN Secretary General has been extremely shrewd in making sure that there is never a major conflict of interest or clash of ego between them and the elected Secretary General. What better way to guarantee this than to elect someone from lesser mortal nations? This, to make sure that even if there is a conflict of interest, the geopolitical influence of his native nation would not pose any hindrance. All that Kofi Annan could do when the US almost unilaterally decided to invade Iraq was to feel upset. Reason?? He was from Ghana. But what if he would have been from a country like India which is military powerful, economically booming, has global aspirations and yet not willing to always play to the tune set by the US? A verbal threat of economic isolation or stoppage of aid is good enough to make a Ghana or even a South Korea back off. But it’s doubtful whether it would work for India. At least it didn’t work after the 1998 nuclear tests. Need more reasons why Shashi Tharoor was not elected for the post? He certainly would have, had he been from a Sierra Leone or Chile. But countries like India? No way. It’s now too hot to play with them. So adieu to reforms in such elections, hail status quo and continue with a hogwash of ineffective reforms.

Hyundai’s new star

Hyundai i10The Santro was a stupendous success. Then Hyundai faltered a bit. Now, it hopes that i10 can do a Santro now. An insight by Karan Mehrish

Before Hyundai introduced the Santro in India in 1998, it went through rigorous pre-launch exercises. For instance, it conducted a consumer perception survey on Atos Prime, which was launched in South Korea the previous year, and was to be deemed the Santro in India. The first feedback it received was that potential buyers disliked the high rear end design. The second was that consumers were unaware of the Hyundai brand. The South Korean carmaker went about addressing both these issues.

According to one case study, Hyundai reduced the tall rear end and “made it more aesthetically appealing.” In addition, its advertising campaign, featuring star Shah Rukh Khan, tried to convince the consumers that the brand was worth looking at. In fact, in the series of TV commercials, Khan seemed apprehensive about endorsing Santro. By the time the model was launched, Khan seemed convinced. He declared that he was ready to advertise it as he was certain that Santro was “the car for India.”

Despite this, the critics were unimpressed. They argued that the revolutionary tallboy design could never threaten the dominance of Maruti Suzuki, which almost monopolised the compact segment then. But Santro proved everyone wrong. It became an instant success, and garnered a nearly 12% market share in 1999-2000. Hyundai’s formula of a better product, aggressive pricing and coordinated advertising worked despite the disadvantages it had at that time.

Today, Hyundai hopes to achieve the same result with its just-launched i10. It wants to do a Santro, after being edged out to the third spot by Tata Motors’ Tata Indica. i10 is aimed at re-establishing Hyundai’s losing supremacy in the compact car segment. In fact, Hyundai is so confident that it’s launching the i10 in India before any other market. More importantly, it is doubling its capacity so that it can manufacture the model in India to cater to the demand in other markets. For Hyundai, the i10 seems to have been clearly designed and priced with an eye towards the future.

Peace pangs make Japanese leave...

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Indian Ocean...the Indian Ocean, isolating Bush & denting his Afghan strategy

The decision of Japanese Government to withdraw its Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) from Indian Ocean Region (IOR), is certainly a setback to Bush’s Afghan strategy. Japan, a strong ally of the US in east Asia, sent supply ship Tokiwa & destroyer Kirisame to the IOR in 2001 months after the Parliament passed special anti-terrorism law. The government, which failed to reach a consensus with the Opposition, had no other option but to withdraw the mission as the anti-terror law expired on November 1. Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, however, has said that his government would bring in a new legislation to allow Japan to carry out its mission. But his claims appear to be unrealistic as the Opposition has made plain that it would not support any such move.

The US has already expressed its displeasure over Japan’s move. According to US Ambassador to Japan, Thomas Schieffer, a permanent withdrawal of Japanese mission would send a wrong signal to the “terrorists”. “Japan is a security ally of the US. The security alliance, bilateral cooperation and the refueling mission are three different aspects of US-Japan relations. Therefore, one cannot understand the dynamics of the bilateral relations by focusing on only one of these three. Here, the fundamental question is that how independent Japan is within its security alliance with the US,” Dr. H. S. Prabhakar, a professor at JNU & also the Convener of India-Japan Roundtable told B&E. Anyway, it is for sure that the American lobbyists would do whatever is possible to win over the Japanese.

We believe in deciding our own strategy depending on the needs of the market.

“growing markets like india will be our prime focus”

You are the fifth CEO in the time span of just two years at Airbus. Pardon us, but do you foresee an exit soon too? It’s very challenging but at the same time, I am young enough to tackle such challenges! I am not going to leave; not at all, and you are going to see me for atleast another 10 years. There’s much to do for me in Airbus...

Where do you see Airbus headed in the next few years?
We will be surely moving into many high growth countries all over the world (and in Asia) and a growing market like India (alongwith other high growth markets like China) will be our prime focus. We will have co-operation and partnerships with major companies in the country and all over the world to support us... This will enable us to set foot on all nations.

Your comment on the latest delay in the delivery of Boeing’s Dreamliner 787...
I am too new to comment on such delay of other company but as a leader I can say that the delay in delivery of Boeing (our competitor) does not disturb our strategy. We believe in deciding our own strategy depending on the needs of the market.

He began as an ‘extra’ child dancer 27 years back. At 34 today, he’s making admirers dance to his ‘rubbery’ moves. His 2008 flick Jodha Akbar was a hit, and so was he

Rakesh Roshan sings about how Hrithik ‘really’ dances

“My son is today amongst the most admired people because he takes his work very seriously and is committed towards his work. He involves himself in a project completely. He is the only actor who can carry out any type of role. When he acts, the fictional character becomes alive. He always tries to deliver the best and matches directors’ expectations. For me, my moment of pride is when people call me Hrithik Roshan’s father. It is bigger than the Oscar. I am so proud of my son. He’s my identity today!”

Yuvraj Singh #. Yuvraj Singh

When he hit six sixes in an over during a Twenty20 World Cup match, the new ‘prince’ of Indian cricket bowled over not just fans, but also many maidens

Ex-cricketer Nikhil Chopra on Yuvraj’s excitement

“Yuvraj is a very exciting player with great talent. He is a gifted player who is a match winner for every situation. A great asset both as a batsman and a world class fielder who any captain will love to have in his team. Taking Kings Xl Punjab to the semi-finals in the recently concluded Indian Premiere League, he showed skilled captaincy ability. One thing that stands out for Yuvraj is that despite reaching many heights in the game he has his heads on his shoulders and is a good student of the game.”

Realty is more real now

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Real estate has always been a high-value investment in India. But with the introduction of Real Estate Mutual Funds now even the common man can reap the gains. By sunanda roy

While the real Mutual Funds estate prices are sky rocketing every passing day, how about having a real estate exposure for just Rs.1,000? More interestingly, how about earning some profits from it? Sounds great! Then here comes the Real Estate Mutual Funds (REMF) story for you.

After waiting for two long years, SEBI has finally moved to allow REMFs, and has laid its regulations in a manner that will definitely benefit the common man. High valuations and huge transaction costs have, so far, made the real estate sector virtually non-accessible to retail investors. But now, with the introduction of REMFs they can reap benefits from real estates by investing into such funds. Also “such funds will help investors to diversify their portfolio further into different asset classes,” comments Suraj Saraf, Senior Mutual Fund Analyst, ICRA Online Ltd. Looking at the volatility prevailing at the stock market, that’s a great option for sure. Agrees Fahima Shaikh of India Infoline, “Investing in REMF will provide investor’s portfolio with a unique asset class and above that returns, which is fixed income plus. It’s a comparatively more liquid investment than the actual property.”

On the other hand, SEBI’s decision has provided the realty sector with an option to heave a sigh of relief! It’s for a fact that the sector which is facing strong headwind presently, due to the credit mayhem and high inflation, is set to get a respite from SEBI. Because in its guidelines the market regulator has made it compulsory for REMFs to invest at least 35% of their net assets directly in real estate (for aggressive fund managers the option is opened till 100%). The balance amount can be invested indirectly through investment in mortgage backed securities and securities of companies who are involved or engaged in the development of real estate. This necessarily means that REMFs will help the real estate market by improving its liquidity. SEBI has also allowed companies carrying on real estate business for at least five years to apply for launching REMFs if they satisfy certain criteria.

Moreover, to make sure that such funds stay away from speculations SEBI has also made it a point that all REMFs must be close ended, listed on stock exchanges and their NAVs confirmed on a daily basis.

Go On......get REAL

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Dr. R’s ready prescription for a healthy TV life may not help the small screen to stand tall in the long run. savreen gadhoke finds out more

The small screencelebrity ‘reality’ shows is no longer small. And if you’re an avid TV watcher, you would perhaps testify, that of late, the small screen has grown larger than life – all kudos to the ‘slap’ping sixes of IPL, world movie premieres of block-busters, star-studded award shows and our very own saas-bahu serials. Though small, television today, has all the ingredients to get that right concoction to make it big. One such formula, which made stars out of the common man, was Dr. R’s formula – the dose of reality shows! The trend initially started as talent-hunt shows, gradually turned into reality shows and today they are nothing but a tool in the hands of celebrities (both present & erstwhile) to promote themselves. And so we’ve celebrities singing, dancing and making you roll with laughter, across various channels. Today you won’t find a single channel without a minimum of two reality shows (and in some cases more). But somewhere down the line, the creativity that belies in these shows has taken a backseat. With the recent bombardment of celebrity ‘reality’ shows, are the channels stretching reality a bit too far?

The main essence of talent-hunt shows was to provide a platform to the masses to showcase their talent and get recognised by the industry. So shows like Indian Idol, Zee Cine Stars Ki Khoj, The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, et al, were launched with huge fanfare. These shows made stars out of commoners like Abhijeet Sawant, Raju Srivastava and Yuvika Chowdhary (who shared screen with SRK in OSO). Says Indrani Mukherjea, CEO, INX Media, “These were internationally tested formats and provided entertainment in the form of singing and dancing.” But gradually, the concept of talent-hunt has faded and now they are merely entertainment shows running on star power & popularity of former contestants.
